Teaser: It’s time to take a trip on a boat! Unfortunately, the sea is not for everyone.

It was Luke’s first time on a boat, and he was absolutely ecstatic about it. He had been looking forward to this trip for weeks, ever since he had found out about it. They were riding on this small boat to go to a town on a small island nearby; the Professor had been summoned there for work, some great mystery that had baffled the local police.

Professor Layton, however, seemed a bit less excited about the prospective journey. He had accepted the request for help based on the desperation evident in that phone call from the police in that town, in accordance with his natural inclination to assist others wherever possible. However, he had later privately voiced to Luke and Flora that he was considering changing his mind because he had learned that the town in question was on an island. That is, surrounded by water.

Luke didn’t really understand at the time, nor did Flora, who had been on boats a few times in her young life; she admitted that her father had actually taken her on a rather extravagant cruise when she was young. As a result, she had developed an affection for being on the water. Thus, she has asked permission to accompany them to the town, and found that it was given.

Indeed, the only one who did not seem terribly excited about this trip was the good Professor Layton himself. He hemmed and hawed about it right up until the big day came, when they gathered their things and headed out. They arrived at the dock with plenty of time to spare, boarded the boat and set sail, much to Luke’s delight.

“Isn’t this amazing?” he leaned against the railing and looked down at the pretty water below. It was churning up white and sea-green in the boat’s wake, the surface reflecting the sunlight. It was all such a lovely scene aboard a nice, comfortable boat for the two-day trip.

Despite having seen such things before and her own personal experiences aboard ships and boats, Flora seemed just as enchanted by it all as he did. “I love sailing,” she said happily. “And what a beautiful day for it.” She turned to the third member of their little party. “Don’t you think so, Professor?” A pause when she realized that Layton had moved away from them, a bit further down the deck. “Professor?”

Layton seemed to be sort of slumped over the railing, his hands clutching the top metal pipe; his feet kept slipping out from under him, and he would have to right himself quickly. His hat was on the deck beside him, a sure sign that something was not as it should be.

Flora glanced back at Luke, who appeared to be just as puzzled as she was. And as one person they moved towards their guardian; he did not glance up, barely even seemed to notice their approach until Luke spoke up. “Professor?”

With a slight groan, Layton lifted his head, and both children gaped. The Professor’s face was the same sea-green color as the water beneath the boat. “P-Professor?” Flora managed. “You don’t look well.”

He slumped again. “I d-don’t care much for b-boats, my dear…”

That was as far as he got before something else occupied his attention, and both Flora and Luke quickly turned away. This was not at all how they had envisioned this trip going, but it certainly explained Layton’s resistance to get on the boat.
