House watched intently from across the cafeteria as Cameron laughed lightly at something Dr. Ned Trent, Head of Pediatrics, was saying to her. His stomach clenched as she continued smiling at the new doctor. He was too far away to hear what they were saying, but he knew, according to the buzz at the nurse's station, that the man was both charming and good looking. And available.
Seeing Cameron like this was doing strange things to his heart. She was rarely ever this unguarded around the office. Truth be told, he wanted to be the one to bring on one of those smiles that reached her eyes and made her cheeks look like ripe peaches. He wanted to be the one to make her laugh. And not just sarcastically. Not that he'd ever admit that.
"Jealous much?" Wilson asked, stepping up beside him and taking in the object of House's musings.
In answer, House glowered darkly at his friend, snatched the chips off Wilson's tray and stalked off to a table in the corner.
Wilson followed with an exasperated sigh, sliding into the chair across from House. "I don't know why I even bother attempting to eat around you. Maybe I should just start buying two of everything," he said, more to himself than to House.
"Oh stop whining," House snapped. Nodding toward the new doctor, he asked, "What do you think women see in that guy anyway?"
"You mean besides those perfect teeth, that wavy dark hair and those bedroom eyes?"
"Hate to disappoint you, but I don't think he swings that way," House retorted, raising his eyebrows at his friend's description.
Ignoring the barb, Wilson continued. "If you're so threatened by the guy, why don't you just ask Cameron out yourself? Oh wait, I remember, it's because that would involve the possibility of expressing feelings and actual emotions," he said with a roll of his eyes and a fake shudder.
"Thanks, Dr. Phil," House snarked, snatching Wilson's drink and washing down a bite of his sandwich. Schooling his features into neutral, he continued to watch Cameron with the doctor until finally, she turned away and left the cafeteria.

Cameron was feeling distracted and nearly messed up the lab tests she was running. House was being snarky, bitter, irritable today. He was more... more House than usual and she had yet to figure out why, though not for lack of trying. His leg didn't seem to be bothering him any more than any other day. But something had changed to make him lash out at everyone the way he had been today.
"Hey, Allison. I was hoping I'd catch you here."
She turned in time to see the new Head of Pediatrics enter the lab.
"Hi," she answered, smiling brightly. Crap, what's his name again, she thought. Her eyes fell to his chest where he'd normally be wearing his name tag, but it was conspicuously absent just now. He looked like he was headed home. Normally she was good with names, but she'd been so busy contemplating House and his bitter mood that she'd completely forgotten. Craig, Bill, Brad...No, none of those were ringing any bells. TODD! she suddenly thought triumphantly. That's it. Todd Trent. Thank God. She hated to be rude, even if he was a little smarmy for her taste.
"Working late, eh?" he asked. "That House must be a bitch to work for."
"He's not so bad," she answered, secretly fuming inside.
"Listen, I was wondering if you'd like to have dinner with me?"
The smug grin on his face made her stomach churn. It was funny really. House was the King of Smug, which she found oddly attractive. But Todd's particular brand of smugness was completely unappealing to her. For the life of her, she couldn't understand all the buzz around the hospital about his supposed charm and good looks. Whatever! She was not going out with him, that was for sure.
"That's a really nice offer," she lied, "but I have a lot of work to finish up. And until we diagnose the patient, I really can't leave."
"How about tomorrow then? I can assure you I'm worth the wait," he joked, flashing a nearly blinding smile.
"Um, well, here's the thing Todd, I'm already involved with someone. But thanks, anyway," she said as kindly and as dismissively as she could. It wasn't exactly a lie. Her heart was involved, even if the person it belonged to didn't want it.
He gave her a confused look, and appeared to be about to say something when House walked in and interrupted.
"Aren't you on the wrong floor?" House asked, smirking at the young doctor.
"I was just leaving," he answered and walked out with a curious glance back at House and Cameron, before disappearing around the corner.
"Ouch! Rejected by the beautiful Dr. Cameron. That's gotta hurt." He was looking at her with amusement and something else she couldn't quite read.
She flushed at his description of her as beautiful and turned back to her work, surreptitiously watching his reflection in the glass. His mood seemed to have lightened, and she was just as confused about that as she had been about his earlier temper.
"You do know his name is Ned, right?" he asked, with that smug smile she found so sexy.
Snapping back around, she looked at him with surprise and the dawning realization that he was right. House, who couldn't even remember their patient's names had remembered Ned's. It shocked her.
"I...I couldn't remember," she murmured, feeling a bit bad about getting it wrong. "I should probably apologize..."
He rolled his eyes at her. "You're too nice for your own good. You know that?"
"How would you feel if the girl you had your eye on couldn't even remember your first name?" she defended.
"The girl I have my eye on has never even said my first name," he responded, closing up the space between them and looking down at her with those piercing blue eyes.
She swallowed nervously and tried to back up, but she was already pressed against the counter. His nearness caused heat to roll over her from her head to her toes and back again. Her skin prickled in anticipation as he reached up to touch her cheek and her eyes closed of their own accord when the contact was made.
"Say it," he ordered softly, causing her eyes to fly open again.
"Greg," she murmured.
And then his lips came crashing down on hers.
