Jim logically waited until nightfall to find Spock, sure that a few extra hours of planning would help him tremendously.
Unfortunately, he was so nervous that as he moved his pawn forward, his hands shook it into the other pieces. It proved an interesting game of chess.

Spock noted the anxiety, but didn’t mention it, eyes watching in amusement as Jim moved in jerks and spasms and jumped at the slightest sound. It seemed to take too long to finally end the game, and Jim decided it was an opportune time to strike. Or pounce, as Gaila would put it.

He moved quickly, too quickly for someone as nervous as he was supposed to be, so it took Spock unawares as Jim fell against him in a firm but awkward kiss.

A second or two of stillness and Jim leaned back. “Did it feel like true love to you?”

“It felt like a kiss, James,” Spock answered honestly. “I do not know how true love feels, as I have never felt it.”

“Yeah, that makes two of us.” He paused, giving a sideways glance to Spock. “Try it again?”

“A logical-”

Before he could finish whatever he was going to say, Jim’s lips were on his again, renewed in fervor, fingers in Spock’s hair and pressing around rounded human ears. This time, when they separated, it was with a sigh and a rub of their noses.

“That was a little better,” Jim mumbled.

“I find myself in agreement,” Spock replied quietly. “Perhaps we should continue tomorrow. It is almost dawn, and I do not think my Vulcan half will take this news quite as well.”

Jim laughed. “You’d be surprised how convincing I am.”

Jim left after another light kiss, slept for a few hours, and then decided to help Uhura - Nyota, he remembered - in the kitchen. She had her hands full with a large pot of vegetable soup over the fire, stirring and humming a tune he’d never heard.

He started to hum with her as he did the dishes. They almost broken into a song and dance, they got so carried away.

“So,” she said suddenly, out of the blue. “You kissed him yet?”

“You and Gaila talk a lot, don’t you?” he asked deadpan.

“Can I take that as a yes?” she teased.

He wasn’t going to give in that easily. “Maybe, maybe not.”

“Oh, ho! Was there tongue?”

Jim spluttered, turning to her with wide eyes. “What is it with you girls and tongue?” He thought about if for a moment.
“Never mind, forget I asked that.”

There was quaint laughter that morning in the kitchen.

When he saw McCoy at lunchtime, the doctor had an immediate response. “I don’t wanna know.”

“One kiss doesn’t really tell me if he’s my true love. Two kisses, either, though that second one was better than the first.”

McCoy cursed. “Damn it! I told you didn’t wanna know!”

Jim smiled, then became solemn. “Hey,” he asked quietly, looking like a kid more than the adult that he was. “What if I’m not… you know… what if it’s not me? What’s going to happen to him?”

McCoy didn’t answer. He thought they both knew what would happen.

“Start spending some time with him during the day, get under his skin some. It might help.”

“I hope so.”

-

As it turned out, Vulcan Spock wasn’t entirely against spending time with Jim, if slightly annoyed at his presence. Jim got very used to the glare that was constantly sent his way, and really couldn’t help but laugh at the shock a simple question induced.

“Do Vulcans kiss different than humans?”

Spock was wide-eyed for half a second before slipping back into his façade. “With their fingers,” he answered tensely.

“Can you show me how?”

Spock narrowed his eyes suspiciously. “For what purpose?”

Jim smiled happily. “So I can kiss you.”

Spock looked at Jim down his nose. “I had thought you had already done so.”

“Well, yeah, in the human way, but I figure, since you’re only half, if we did it both ways, it might make a bigger impact, you know?”

“No. Perhaps another Vulcan will be willing to teach you.”

Jim frowned, realizing Spock was leaving him behind. “Spock!” he called. “You’re the only Vulcan I know! Spock?”

It took a week and a half to get Vulcan Spock to teach him how to kiss in the proper Vulcan way, and Jim found it strangely erotic.

“So I just rub my fingers against his…er, yours? Like this? Are you sure this isn’t some kind of kinky foreplay that leads straight to sex?”

It was so fun exasperating Spock, Jim couldn’t help himself when he leaned up and pressed a light kiss to Spock’s lips.

A sharp spark zinged throughout his body and he gasped and whispered, “Did you feel that, too?”

“Vulcans do not feel Jim,” Spock said silently, moving back a step, allowing the pain of transformation take over him. When he stood up, he was fully human again, blinking strangely as Jim embraced him in a hug, reigniting the spark with a brief kiss in both manners, fingers brushing fingers and lips brushing lips.

“Humans feel, Spock,” he breathed against the human ear of the half-Vulcan. “But I’m beginning to wonder if Vulcans can’t. I think they can. I know they can.”

“Jim, the curse has not passed yet. My transformations still occur. Perhaps this is not…”

“Don’t,” Jim stated with finality. “Don’t say it. It doesn’t matter anyway. I want you, Vulcan or human or whatever.” He stepped away, looking up into dark human eyes. “I’m giving myself over to you, Spock.”

It took a moment, but Spock accepted.

-

Jim wasn’t a virgin, by any means, but it was almost strange making love. Movements were slow and gentle, kind of awkward and painful at first. A few times he actually had to direct Spock in what to do…which was a little embarrassing.

The best part, he thought, was waking up next to a warm body, tangled in sheets that weren’t his own, the smell of Spock surrounding him, and feeling like a whole person, a loved person.

It wasn’t quite dawn when he rolled over and pressed a kiss into Spock’s forehead. He frowned, pulled back and squinted into the darkness.

“Spock?”

Spock blinked down at him. “Yes, Jim?”

“Are you Vulcan?”

It took Spock a moment to understand the question. Dawn was another hour away, and yet… he was already Vulcan?

“You’re only half,” Jim said in realization, looking into the very human eyes of the Vulcan. “You’re half human, and half Vulcan. You’re back to normal.”

Jim proceeded to jump him.

In the morning, they went to Doctor McCoy, just to make sure everything was alright with Spock. Everything checked out, and for the first time in a long while, Spock ate with the others.

-

It was spring before Jim broke the news to his family. Unfortunately, they were in the process of losing the farm.

It was kind of sexy, he thought, watching Spock sweep in with a flourish of his cape, buying back the land with a full coin pouch. The bankers actually quivered in their boots when he glared at them, handing the deed back to Winona with a small nod before taking his rightful place next to Jim.

Jim was pretty sure he’d never seen fat men in suits run so fast. There was a feast that night, in honor of Spock, and later, Jim showed him the bench. They watched the horses together.

Spock, it seemed, knew their names before Jim could tell him.

“How the hell do you know that?”

There was a small Vulcan smile fluttered at him, a kiss of fingertips. “They take shelter in my stables, Jim. Did you not notice them before?”

All this time, and he never knew.

He leaned against Spock. “Do you believe in happily ever after?”

There was no amusement in Spock’s voice when he answered. “I believe that anything is possible when it comes to you.”

Jim smiled. “I thought you might say that.” He kissed Spock. “Let’s do our best, shall we?”

“Indeed.”

So that’s what they did.
