A little something I wrote on impulse a long long long time ago.
Dangerously Close
“What do you think of this, dear?”
Alex sashayed in front of the mirror. She had on a dress that was part of the latest fall/winter collection. And she thought she looked fabulous in it. But she wanted a second opinion - which was supposed to come from her fiancé, Steven… who was currently engrossed in a sports magazine.
Alex frowned. What would it take for her to get Stevie’s attention? Sometimes she wondered why she even bothered to drag him along with her on her shopping trips. Well, she thought, maybe it was because he’s her fiancé. And this was what fiancés do - come along on shopping trips and help carry the purchases.
“Stevie. What do you think of this dress?” Alex tried asking again.
“Mm.” Came the reply.
Alex noticed that Stevie did not even bother to look up from the magazine.
“Do you think I look nice in this?” She twirled around in the dress.
“Mm.” Same reply.
“Do I look fat in this?”
“Mm.”
If she did not know he was too absorbed with the magazine, she would have been offended. She sighed and began picking out the pieces she wanted to buy.
“I’m gonna buy everything I’ve tried on if you don’t mind.”
“Mm.”
Alex grinned. Sometimes Stevie does not know what he was agreeing to.
What exactly was he reading? She stood behind him to take a look. It was an article about Xabi.
“He looks good in that picture, doesn’t he?” She asked.
Stevie nodded.
And Alex decided to play a joke on her fiancé.
“You look like you’re in love with him. Are you?”
“Mm.”
Alex chuckled. Men. They don’t know what they’re saying sometimes. What a tale this would be to tell the rest of her girlfriends! They were going to have such a laugh.
Alex instructed the helpful salesgirl to pack all the clothes as she went back into the dressing room. She did not know how dangerously close she was to the truth about Stevie and Xabi.

A little while after Alex disappeared back into the room, Stevie looked up and stared in horror at the door. Oh god. What have I just said…
