First things first!
I hope you're having a wonderful, magical day. :) A huge happy birthday to you and cheers, wishing for many, many more to come.
And then, I was tagged by
thanoodles to do a meme about originals characters&writing, so there you go. It's boring.
1. Tell us about your favorite writing project/universe that you've worked with and why.
I have several stories I absolutely love to work on. I'm always creating worlds and stories and characters and developing them in my head, but there are those that have my special attention, namely Black Blood, J-Chicks and, of course, The Scrolls of Evalyre .➥
Black Blood appeared with Cat, the main character, as a shitty OC way back when I first began to roleplay on a Brazilian forum. Amazingly, she was originally a con-artist with curly blonde hair. Yeah. Yeah, I know. But ever since, I think she's been through so many changes and development to the point where the need to write down all of her story was too big of an itch that I had to do it. I made a shitty webcomic, but because I'm no good with panelling&backgrounds, I just gave up. It's modern London (approximately 2004), and I try to the best of my ability to keep it somewhat realistic within the supernatural genre (monsters with teeth and shit). But I've always toyed with the idea of a novel for her, and I might do it, just for fun. And give it a rename.
➥
J-Chicks started out as a joke between
pumahmistress and I; a random openCanvas session, if I recall, where these two characters just... popped out. They were basically representations of ourselves, really (thus why they're called Ness and Neme) but somehow we took them out of the fun session and started to imagine an epic story for them. And honestly, the only thing that isn't original is the fact it's based on Jedis and the like (because
pumahmistress was playing KOTOR at the time, I believe, so that's why the characters were brought to life), but otherwise, I like to think they're extremely original. It's just fun and dramatic and I absolutely adore the characters relationships, no matter how screwed up they are. This one has a special place in my heart. It's, well, sci-fi, and it's intended to be a webcomic, but again, I suck at panelling so we've been just working on it kinda on and off. It's half-original, half-George Lucas, so don't tell him or he'll sue us.
➥
The Scrolls of Evalyre has come such a long, long way. I began writing it when I was about fourteen, and it was just this silly little story in a fantasy land. Surely, you know the kind: medieval Europe of the sorts with lovely elements of the fantastic, warriors and sorcerers and dragons and the lot of them. It's my pet project, albeit I don't work on it all the time. Usually, I write and re-write a lot during the Summer or when I'm not under pressure with college or theatre, because it needs a lot of patience and attention. Creating a world isn't easy at all, especially when everything has been done, so I try to make it as interesting as possible, but my confidence falters a lot in regards to this so I have to take long breaks before I start clawing at my face and banging my head on walls. But it's really amazing, for me, to see the changes this project has been through and how different it is today from what it was the first time it was imagined.
2. How many characters do you have? Do you prefer males or females?
I don't really keep track of them, especially because I like to experiment with characters a lot, but I suppose if you count the main ones (read, developed and written), or at least project-wise ones, I probably have over twenty or so. I don't know how many are males or females, but I wouldn't be surprised if I had more females. It's mostly unconscious, but I like writing them more since I have a better understanding of women and because I'm hesitant on writing guys - I'm always afraid they'll be too... you know, womanly, or worse, Gary Stu-y and I hate that, so they're a lot more work than women.
3. How do you come up with names, for characters (and for places if you're writing about fictional places)?
Depends on the setting. If it's modern world, I just browse around in my mind for names that are completely normal or if I think I'm repeating a pattern (having two characters with the same name is fine, but four is pushing it), I try to check out books from my shelves and see a name (especially regarding surnames). I mean, Catherine Anne is a pretty common name. As for the sci-fi or fantasy setting, I try to go with names that are both easy to read and say. They're mostly occidental-influenced, given I am from Europe, and generally, I like something that's easy on the ear. With places, the process is basically the same. The thing I try to avoid the most is Latin-sounding anything. It's just... silly.
4. Tell us about one of your first stories/characters!
I've already told about Cat, which I believe is my first RPG character, but I could always talk about
Chappu. He wasn't like that at all, his design that is. I was inspired to draw a drow (dark elf) one day, so I drew a purple blotch little guy and named it Chappu because I was playing FFX at the time and I liked the name. I wish I still had the Oekakis I did of him, but I think the oldest thing I have is
this hideous thing here. Previously, he was a druid, and there wasn't really a story, but then I started with
Arbor Vita (haaa, Latin...) and re-designed him to adapt him to the story, so today he's not a drow at all, but an invented species and he does have a story.
5. By age, who is your youngest character? Oldest? How about “youngest” and “oldest” in terms of when you created them?
Agewise, my youngest character is probably either
Rufus or
Bee from an old ass project of mine. The oldest is probably... Bregog, from Evalyre. Or, no, wait, Dragonus, who is Maude's daddy. In terms of the most recent one created, if you don't count the peeps for
mothdeath, either the
EVA derps, the
Elite Forces (though I kind of dropped this project) or
The Sacrifices. Oldest would be either Cat or Chappu or the Evalyre folk.
6. Where are you most comfortable writing? At what time of day? Computer or good ol' pen and paper?
Any time of the day, but as said, Summer time is the best time for me. And holidays, naturally. The place doesn't really matter, as long as I'm isolated. Can't write with friends around, since I need to focus. Paper and pen, always. It flows much more naturally that way. There's always the sudden moment of inspiration that makes you want to write down something and since I always carry a notebook, I can easily nourish that need. The hideous process of typing it on the computer later on is worth it.
7. Do you listen to music while you write? What kind? Are there any songs you like to relate/apply to your characters?
I listen to music while I breathe. So yes. But there are certain types of musics I find more appropriate or more inspiring to listen to depending on what I'm writing. Mostly, progressive rock or at least instrumental stuff.
8. What's your favorite genre to write? To read?
To write, I like always giving it a action-y twist, and I do love to create new worlds and cultures and the likes, so I have a fondness for the out-of-the-ordinary world, but I like mixing contemporary with supernatural. To read, I love everything, especially dark humour novels. But I try to read a bit of everything. Except romance. Ugh, go away, Nicholas Spark.
9. How do you get ideas for your characters? Describe the process of creating them.
Oh, I don't know. It varies with my mood. Sometimes, the world comes up first and I have the need to populate it. I daydream a lot when I'm bored, so I suppose the creative process involves some quiet time. Huh, sometimes, I just get inspired by music. There are other times where I design the character first, which is usually a random doodle with nothing on my head until the first sketch is drawn. I tweak a lot, and I mean, a lot as I develop a character, so I guess it's a, huh, wobbly process since I go back and forth with changes until I'm satisfied.
10. What are some really weird situations your characters have been in? Everything from serious canon scenes to meme questions counts!
You could say
Maude has the habit of finding herself in the weirdest situations (she's mostly a RPG character, though). She's been hit on by a jelly-monster thing. A dickgirl once tried to hump her. RPG-wise, that is. Yup. Awkward. Cat slipped on ice once when she was trying to jump off a building to follow a guy and had the enormous luck to not to break her neck because she had the clichéd scene of landing on something soft, in this case, an open truck full of cotton. And one other time a certain French reporter landed on top of her. A lot of shit falls, apparently. Ness keeps getting stalked by the Green Alien Dude. Neme's hair eats people in their sleep. J-Chicks is a lovely box of weird.
11. Who is your favorite character to write? Least favorite?
Eesh, I love writing them all, or else I wouldn't bother, but I suppose any of the three first projects I mentioned. Especially Cat, I guess, since it's basically a habit.
12. In what story did you feel you did the best job of world building? Any side-notes on it you'd like to share?
I only actually half-built two or three worlds, but the one that's been worked on since ever is Evalyre, so I guess I could say that one is the one that has most "building", but I like the story where Rufus comes from because it's steampunk and I love that. Arbor Vita is the same, the world from The Sacrifices is a bit more futuristic mixed with fantasy, but they aren't as worked on as Evalyre. It has World History, even if summed up, so. Yeah. But it's pretty simple otherwise, just your regular fantasy world.
13. What's your favorite culture to write, fictional or not?
I don't know, I like to vary, but I always go for the European one, since it has most History.
14. How do you map out locations, if needed? Do you have any to show us?
I suck at that, but I occasionally draw maps, though I basically redo them as I go. I can show you
Evalyre's map, but it's shitty and I'll probably redo it in a bigger sheet.
15. Midway question! Tell us about a writer you admire, whether professional or not!
Professional, I'll have to say Terry Pratchett and Diana Wynne Jones, and of course, tip my hat at Mr. Tolkien because creating a world takes a goddamn genius. For the dark humour type, definitely Chuck Palahniuk and Irvine Welsh. I really liked Paul Neilman's book, Apathy and other small victories, but I haven't read anything by him again. Stephen King is fun to read, I suppose. Among my friends,
uzis is one of the best writers I know and of course,
pumahmistress comes up with the sexiest things ever. I really love the concepts
thanoodles comes up with. And I love the way
blizzardseason and
stutterbird write. Oh, and
radiostatic has some deliciously fucked up ideas.
16. Do you write romantic relationships? How do you do with those, and how "far" are you willing to go in your writing? ;)
Yeah, but only if they add anything to the story, be it character development or plot bunnies. Mostly, however, I don't care to write about them because I favour bonds and friendships over romance. I'm okay with writing subtle porn, but I don't care to actually do it in the story because it's unnecessary, but sometimes I'll do a drabble or two on a relationship that I think that works perfectly well.
17. Favorite protagonist and why!
Huh, Neme and Ness, I think, because they're absolutely fun and yet, at the same time, buckets of angst. Their relationship works so well, too, even if it's heartbreaking. Although, Cat, Chappu and Maude do have a special place in my heart, but I'd have to say Neme and Ness as favourites.
18. Favorite antagonist and why!
Hmm, Karl from J-Chicks is a sexy bitch and adds on the fucked up shit. Mr. Macabre is not actually an antagonist, but his "help" tends to bring a lot of inner struggles to Cat, so it's always fun to write him. And
Cesar from the shitty vampire story I had long, long time ago.
19. Favorite minor that decided to shove himself into the spotlight and why!
I don't know... Most of the characters I work on aren't minor, since they're important, but I've had characters gone from secondary to protagonist (like Haji, Rufus and Jimbo). I suppose I could point out Ethan from Arbor Vita, who was a character created about the same time Chappu was and I brought him in the story when I was filing some old artwork. Nostalgia get.
20. What are your favorite character interactions to write?
Once more, Neme and Ness, hands down. They're delicious to write. I also adore working on Cat and Blackmore and Cat and Yvette and finally, Cat and Macabre. Arbor Vita has the whole foursome dynamic of Chappu-Vicyn-Béonor-Ethan, that's always fun, especially when Béonor gets pregnant.
21. Do any of your characters have children? How well do you write them?
Not that I know of. Unless someone wants to tell me something. Well, actually, some in Evalyre do, but it'd be a spoiler so. Yup.
22. Tell us about one scene between your characters that you've never written or told anyone about before! Serious or not.
I can't quite remember anything off the bat. I rarely plan very far ahead with my stories - I mean, I trace a particular script, but the details have to flow, have to be natural or they'll just feel forced. But there are scenes that pop out and I gotta note them down to later write.
23. How long does it usually take you to complete an entire story-from planning to writing to posting (if you post your work)?
I-- Huuuh, I've never really completed any of the previously mentioned stories and I'll probably never have the time to conclude them, but if it's a one-shot, I can whip it out pretty fast. If it's a slightly more worked on chapter, I can write two in a day (that includes typing it down on the computer and tweaking). An entire story? Shit, I only completed one many years ago with my bro, and that took a whole year. And it was an absolutely shitty piece. But it was so fun...
24. How willing are you to kill your characters if the plot so demands it? What's the most interesting way you've killed someone?
I don't kill main characters just for the sake of offing them, but I have and I plan to have some deaths occurring during the stories for plot purposes, yeah. The most interesting way? I don't know. I really want to do a "fall into a pit of acid" death one day, though.
25. Do any of your characters have pets? Tell us about them.
Chappu used to have a flying turtle-fairy, lmao. Other than that, Cilla from Evalyre doesn't exactly have a pet, but she has a Bounding with a pigmy owl that flies near.
26. Let's talk art! Do you draw your characters? Do others draw them? Pick one of your OCs and post your favorite picture of him!
I definitely draw them. It helps me with their clothes design, or with the way they are or what colours work and shit. It's also fun. So here, have some random J-Chicks. I don't have favourite pictures.
27. Along similar lines, do appearances play a big role in your stories? Tell us about them, or if not, how you go about designing your characters.
Not exactly, but I like designing them; the clothes, especially and even more so when it comes to a setting such as Evalyre, since it's medieval. I did a lot of research on armours and was heavily influenced by Scottish culture (it's quite evident if you check designs
1&
2 for the main characters), focused on a
practical druid outfit and tried until I found
one for the sorceress.
28. Have you ever written a character with physical or mental disabilities? Describe them, and if there's nothing major to speak of, tell us a few smaller ones.
I don't think so or, if I did, I can't remember. I mean, there are always the occasional bad guys that are just crazy, but none of them had mental disabilities.
29. How often do you think about writing? Ever come across something IRL that reminds you of your story/characters?
Yes and yes. I mean, I think everyone takes little pieces of their lives, their experiences, and writes about them, in a way or another, be it an action-y situation or a dramatic one, a friendship or a heartbreak. It's only natural to write about what you know. I'm always imagining things and just daydream a lot, sometimes write little sidenotes, but I haven't had the time to write. As said, my writing time is during the late Spring, Summer and early Fall.
30. Final question! Tag someone! And tell us what you like about that person as a writer and/or about one of his characters!
This isn't a question and I'm too lazy. Hhh, I guess, if they want,
blizzardseason and
stutterbird. Oh, and
slenderman, she's always talking about writing but I don't know anything about her work so I would like to know. And whoever else wants.
Oh, and I passed on the written exam at the firefighters. Lmao, it was like, everyone doing each other's tests. They don't care much about the written exam. Tomorrow I have the practical one, that one is the one that really count. I hope I can do everything in acceptable terms.
WHAT THE-- DID SOMEONE JUST BUY ME EXTRA 10 USERPICS? QUÉ?
