As we all know Spike has been the invisible man so far in S8 except for two scenes:
- the infamous threesome panel
- the web comic Always darker.
The last issue of the comics made me look at these two occurences differently. At first they seemed pure fun but as people have already found they also contain element of foreshadowing. Here are some more that haven't been previously examined Their tone, first link them to the reunion scene of Buffy and Angel. The threesome panel was way over the top making fun of "romantic" imagery (use of pink, little angels, hearts, cheap symbolism...), the (out of screen) sex scene between Spike and Angel in Always Darker was treated in the same satirical way.
Now on a more serious level if we consider the scene of the threesome from this perspective the chain binding the three characters could work as more than just an element of kink but as a commentary too on the fact that these characters are going to be bound into this story.
I don't know if anything can be deduced about Spike's role from looking at his positions in the scenes: in the panel, he is behind Buffy, looking at her and separated from Angel. In Always Darker his position has shifted, he is associated with Angel and Buffy is excluded. It could easily be interpreted as a foreshadowing of Spike's future role, except that issue 33 contradicts the idea that Angel has rejected Buffy and that two other ominous scenes indirectly stage Spike's execution by Twilight.
Seems like J Whedon has been bluring the tracks ... :-)
