I love this. I love Buster. I love MadBum (yeah, that’s right). I love how young they both are, and how important everything seems, and how Madison can’t help but overthink things on his way to heartbreaking self-discovery.
I love the pitcher-catcher dynamic throughout the story. Which, along with your endnotes, led me to think long thoughts about Buster Posey. (I apologize in advance for assuming you’ll care to read them. Ah, well.) At the point this story is set, he needed to prove he would be able to handle a phenomenal Major League pitching staff. He had to have enough faith in himself, be confident enough, to get everyone to trust him. OK, fine. But the thing is, he’s still so young that he knows more about baseball than he does about life. So when life happens, he falls back on what the game has taught him - that he needs to be in charge, call the pitch, know what’s going on. Don’t let anyone catch you making shit up as you go along. Especially not your pitchers. So I think that’s where Buster stands vis-à-vis the rules. He’s sort of making them up, and is trying to convince everyone, himself included, that they’re as obvious as throwing fastballs when you don’t have your breaking stuff.
Well then. Anyways, I’m very excited about this new pairing. I can only hope this will lead to lots of tapping into the Giants’ RPS potential. Think of the new challenges that await! For instance: you thought writing Haren/Harden was hard, try wrapping your head around Sanchez/Sanchez! (Not gonna lie. I would love me some Freddy/Jonathan.)
aaaand i love you. because YES AND YES TO ALL OF THIS.
the pitcher/catcher dynamic is one of the main reasons i was so psyched about buster (also, because he is buster), and i don't think i really got into it as deeply as i might have in this first foray, primarily because it's a madison pov, but yeah, everything you've said about buster's motivations and thought processes is pretty much exactly where i want to go with it. especially: don't let anyone catch you making shit up as you go along. oh my god, that is going to be like my buster posey motto from now on.
also, the sanchez brothers! such love i have for them. i would actually kinda be all about that (freddy from hollywoooood), but just now ford/burriss is the current giants rps brain worm. because of speediness, and general adorability.
