So, yeah. This left me rather emotionally frayed. Which surprised me to a degree given that I was fairly skeptical of this pairing initially, but I guess all you have to do is write about nightmares involving teeth falling out and you've sucked me in. Pretty sympathetic take on Bumgarner, and a believably traumatizing version of Buster. I was sort of heart-wrenched for both of them by the end. Also I'm watching the Giants game, with Bumgarner on the mound and Posey catching him and it's kind of a lot under the circumstances.
Anyway-
Bumgarner concocts fantastical daydreams about the two of them getting stuck in an elevator, or maybe there will be an earthquake and somehow in the chaos and wholesale collapse they'll be unhurt but trapped together under an aesthetically pleasing pile of rubble, and Posey won't be able to pretend he's not there. But mostly he just lets Posey ignore him.
That line was absolutely spectacular. I read it several times, shared it with others, etc.
Btw, these were the best endnotes ever. Welcome bit of comic relief!
dude! the dream about the teeth falling out was literally in the initial idea, which was: quick and dirty intro to madison and buster. adrenaline, just kinda keep going until your hands are in pants and there is weirdness. dreams about your teeth falling out, and pitching naked.
(i really have to stop setting myself the impossible goal of "quick" stories.)
