1) Sam, you mean the word insightful, not sightful, which isn't a word.
2) I concur wholeheartedly. This has been an observation that has been made by many of us, including myself, for quite a while. It is 100% true, but the question is whether it is particularly terrible. With the inception of the welfare state (something most liberals and in fact many ppl in general will agree with), more and more of society's weak are saved, to live another day for the chance to reproduce rather than die and eliminate themselves from the gene pool. But what most folks would find is that it isn't "fair" (a relative word in and of itself) to punish those who are not able to defend themselves, even if it is for nature's sake. THat is most obvious with regards to medicine. Many people suffer with diseases, but is it really fair to allow them to suffer for something they could not control? The calculated in us says that it is, the moral in us says it isnt. Ultimately, the idea is that there will one day be a Panacea Potion, a cure-all for disease, and that any scientific advancement will further this cause. Whether that happens or not is to be found later.
WIth regards to the mating, in a sense thought has muddled the survival instinct. Not always are the best mates chosen, and that is mostly due to judgment calls based on weak aesthetic desires (you can tell I'm someone who looks bad). The advent of protection is a product of thought as well, preventing what should normally occur. All in all however, how do you propose a solution? All this is based on societal standards of the now, all on individual desires of the populace. No one thinks of the benefit of the species, that's further from their mind. It isn't logical anymore to mate just for the sake of children for most people.
It's sad, but evolving thought has crippled the survival instinct. Hopefully, science will lead us to the point of not requiring survival tactics to overcompensate for this; however, when one day we are faced with something we cannot handle, we will indeed perish. C'est la vie (sp?), such is life...
