The other night we went out to try a new Indian restaurant in our neighborhood. It's in kind of a sketchy strip mall (along with a decrepit "Indian-Pakistani" grocery that we checked out once soon after we moved here only to discover that it had none of the spices we needed but only beat-up looking sacks of rice and a sad freezer full of pre-packed halal meat), but it had lots of good yelp! reviews, so we chanced it. The food was not particularly good, but while we were sitting and eating, me facing the front window, a huge white truck pulled into the parking lot and stopped. A skinny, ethnic-looking dude with a mustache got out and wandered around the side of the building and came back with a grimy, gray shopping cart, which he pushed up to the side of the truck.
He opened a door and climbed in and reappeared with a whole, skinned goat carcass (not wrapped in anything), which he tossed into the shopping cart. He repeated this again and again and again, until the cart was packed full of goat corpses. He then slowly pushed it through the parking lot, around to the handicap ramp at the edge of the strip mall, then up on the sidewalk, and finally directly past the window I was looking through. It was close enough for me to read that the dirty goat corpse cart was, in fact, the property of Safeway, and the mustache dude gave me a quick glance before pushing the corpses down to the halal grocery, where (I assume) they were chopped up and packaged and loaded into the sad freezer.
I also happen to know that there are people who work at grocery stores whose jobs are to drive around the neighborhood looking for stray carts to bring home and re-use. You do the math.
