He had a less than stellar private life, until he married his now widow thirty years ago. He likely should have spent time in jail for contributing to the death of a young woman. His family history is storybook-like, sometimes funny, sometimes sad, sometimes unbelievable, in the end, quite enchanting.
The Kennedy's, here in Massachusetts where I was born and raised, are like mythical figures, like Gods. I grew up in an Irish Catholic community where having a picture of JFK or Bobby framed in your living room was not an odd occurrence. I lived in Hull and can point out to you which house it was the Kennedy's resided in for some time, because everyone talks about it. I have been to Hyannisport and seen firsthand the respect that the community has for the Kennedy clan. I have been to the JFK library and seen the amazing outpouring of respect, love and devotion people have for the family, specifically for Teddy. My heart still breaks when I think of him giving his younger brother Bobby's eulogy, or when I think of his words soon after JFK Jr died in a crazy, insane plane tragedy.
He was the best senator, in my opinion, that this country will ever see. He was tireless and fought for the things you and I, the average citizen, wanted and needed. He was the voice of people who would not otherwise have a say. I respect that more than I can ever say with proper words.
I don't talk much about politics here, or anywhere really. I am not registered as a Democrat, but my heart and my ideals lie there, for the most part. It makes for an interesting household, living with a card carrying Republican with loud and strong opinions of his own.
This clip here, from last year, after he had been diagnosed with brain cancer...It's uplifting and you can see the outpouring of love people had for him there. Incredible. To say that his endorsement of Obama was a big thing around here is a definite understatement.
RIP Edward Kennedy. You will certainly be missed.
**ETA: I just finished watching VP Joe Biden's eloquent and touching speech. I am most impressed. As soon as it goes up on YouTube or elsewhere I will put it up here.
