I really, really liked it!
Oooh and because I told
gritsinmisery I would include a piccie of Zack...
And with JDM of course!!
First off I have to say...I didn't think the nudity in Dr. Manhattan was that bad. I see it being brought up in a lot of reviews, so I thought I would bring it up first here. In the GN he is nude and anatomically correct in a really, uh, soft sort of way. I admit to specifically looking the first time he was on screen in the full buff, but after that I sort of forgot about it. I dunno, I am someone who often puts on clothes because she has to, not because she wants to. Maybe that has something to do with it? It would have been interesting to see what he looked like all over when he was all huge and powerful like though, LOL!
Now, for the rest. I LOVED the opening sequence, the use of Bob Dylan was great there and all the bits and details crammed into that three minutes or so was really very effective for a short bit of backstory on the characters. Also, I was blown away by some of the early visuals, some of the really iconic bits of the GN that were reproduced almost frame for frame in the movie, for instance, Edward Blake's death (and later, the Mars shots, like watching the frames of the book come alive!) I will be a Perv here and say that I kept wishing his robe would open, just a little, so I could see what he had on underneath, hehe. I leaned over and said to Becci, "Does that make me a bad person?" and she said "No, it's just typical of you." She is right of course...
I though that JDM did an excellent job with the role, actually, I thought they all did, except for the chick that played Laurie/Silk Spectre, but it has to be said that I thought she was a pretty weak character in the GN as well. Just my opinion, I know a lot of people like the character and I am sure she is a decent actor otherwise, only other thing I saw her in was 27 Dresses. I liked Patrick Wilson as Dan/Nite Owl, more than I liked him in the GN. He definitely doesn't come off as aloof as he does in the GN, but that worked to the character's advantage, I think. The sex scene was kind of tongue in cheek, but I expected it to be, since I'd read previously that they used Hallelujah there, and haha, her hitting the fire button as she is climaxing is just funny in a sort of iconic, frat boy sort of way. And hell, that she kept the boots on was just kinky and hot.
Billy Crudup's Jon/Dr.Manhattan really worked for me. I liked how detached he seemed, how almost sad he seemed, there was just that hint of it there that you couldn't get from the GN, you know? I thought his story was the most interesting on screen, the way he talks time and occurence in a non linear way really fits who he is, and I've read in more than one review that people aren't liking his soft spoken ways, but honestly I think that fits the character really well.
I thought Adrien Veidt/Oz could have been better cast, but there again I also think he could have been better written as a whole right from the beginning.
That leads me to Jackie Earl Hayley as Rorshach...He was simply kick ass, IMHO. I thought he really embodied the character and played it just like he was meant to be played. I buy him as this sort of vigilante and does anyone else think that face/mask of his is creepy as anything?? I really thought it was super effective and I liked how it had a character and life all of its own depending on Rorshach's mood and temper. Little things like it going black when he realized the girl had been fed to the dogs, or a face appearing when he got angry, I loved those little touches. Also, the ink blot sort of thing he becomes after Dr. Manhattan evaporates him was so appropriate.
I've also heard it said that the soundtrack is getting a lot of hate...I personally liked it. I think a lot of it was meant to be tongue in cheek, so you kinda have to take it with that big grain or two of salt, you know??
So yeah, squeeing over here! And DAMMIT my hard on for JDM gets bigger every fucking day. Good GODS I just want to have mad monkey sex of every which way with the man...(oh which leads me to, I know, bad lead in, the attempted rape on Sally...It wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. It was just enough to get the point across, if you ask me. Sure you didn't ask me but whatever...I thought him killing the preggers girfriend was actually more brutal.)
I kinda want to see it again. Wanna come with?
