Behind Every Good Man There’s An Even Greater Woman

If there was one thing Catherine prided herself on, it was her intuition. She fully believed that she could tell what others were feeling just by talking to them. So when she visited Steve on leave for the first time since he began heading the task force she knew something was different about him. It wasn’t until she heard him talk about his new partner, Detective Danny Williams, that she knew exactly what that was. Of course she didn’t bring it up. Just because the man she was having casual sex with talked about his partner constantly when they were together or blushed uncontrollably ever time his said his name didn’t mean anything. After all, it could simply be a crush, and Steve did like them demanding.

But as time went on, Catherine came to understand just how much Danny meant to Steve. In all her years of knowing him she had never heard him speak that excitedly about anything. Not even when he got to make his own explosives for the first time during his SEAL training. From his constant chatter, she half expected him to make a move on the his unsuspecting partner, but he didn’t. Still, it didn’t stop her from sleeping with Steve. He was, after all, an Adonis and the sex was always amazing. And if he fantasized about someone else it was fine with her. It wasn’t as if she hadn’t done the same.

No, Catherine wasn’t about to count her losses until she met Danny for the first time and found that she was royally screwed. Steve had invited Danny over for dinner, and for the entire evening she had to watch them laugh, argue, and touch. A few times her presence was forgotten completely as an argument about proper police procedure broke out between the two. Overall Danny gave as good as he took, and that’s why it didn’t take her long to conclude that Steve’s feelings for Danny were not one- sided. It was past midnight when Danny finally decided to call it a night, leaving her alone with Steve.

“So Danny seems like a great guy,” she stated causally as she picked up the empty beer bottles and threw them in a trash-bag.

Steve gave her a nod. “He is. I’m really glad I picked him to be my partner.”

“Don’t you mean ‘forced’?. From the way Danny tells it, you held him at gunpoint, took over his case, forced him to be your partner, and then got him shot because you refused to call for backup.”

“Of course he would only remember the bad parts,” scoffed Steve, rolling his eyes. “I bet he didn’t tell you I had him over later that day for beers. Or that after the case was closed I got him three nights at a the Kahala Hotel as a thank you for having my back.”

“No, he didn’t, but he did tell me that he punched you in the face.,” Catherine replied with a light chuckle.

“That’s not funny Cath,” pouted Steve. “For a little dude he sure hits hard.”

She placed the bag onto the floor and walked over to him, wrapping her arms around his waist. “You better not let him hear you say that or there might be a repeat,” she laughed. “Still, I think it’s kinda weird that you got him shot and he punched you in the face only hours after meeting each other and somehow you two have the most functional relationship I have ever seen.”

Steve rested his head on top of hers. “What makes you say that?”

“I don’t know,” she shrugged. “It’s just...you two couldn’t be more opposite. You fight more than you agree but in some sorta weird, twilight zone way it works. You two work very well together. You’re like my grandparents. Been fighting since the day they met and still together after fifty years.”

“It’s not like that with Danny and I. He’s has an ex-wife and a kid.”

“So you’re saying there has never been a gay man who married a woman first before they began a relationship with a man?,” asked Catherine, pulling away slightly.

“No, that’s not what I’m saying,” Steve stated as he shook his head. “I’m saying that Danny is very much straight, as am I, and we do not have feelings for each other.”

“Doesn’t the whole island already think you’re married.” When Steve didn’t say anything, ducking his head to hide his blushing face she smirked happily as she squeezed him tightly. “I rest my case.”

Yes, Catherine realized that Steve’s feelings for his partner were growing rapidly, and Steve wasn’t going to do anything about it; then she had no choice but to intervene.

Kono had great instincts. It’s the reason she was so good at surfing. She knew which waves to ride and which one she shouldn’t. After she injured her knee and was told she would never surf professionally again she found herself lost. For such a long time, pro surfing had been her life and not to have it there anymore seemed to hurt more than it should. Thankfully though, after putting her life in perspective she realized that there was another profession that relied on sharp instincts.

She was just a few weeks shy of graduating from the police academy when she was approached by Lt. Commander Steve McGarrett of the Navy SEALs to join Hawai’i’s new task force. The moment the offer came out of his mouth she immediately knew her answer was going to be yes. Not because of her cousin, or the hot blond standing next to the gorgeous Commander but because of those awesome instincts that told her this was the job for her.

And it was. From the first case on, the four of them melded into a family, an ohana and Kono couldn’t have been happier. Sure, there it had taken some getting used to, especially the unusual partnership of Steve and Danny. It was weird at first, Danny ranting and slicing his hands wildly through the air while Steve just stared at him with a random expression, but over time it became normal to her. Chin even telling told her that Steve and Danny’s partnership was the healthiest and best partnership he’d ever seen.

Kono was inclined to believe him because the fact of the matter was that Steve and Danny were great partners. They were so in tune with each other. Steve always brought Danny lunch whenever Rachel was giving him a hard time about Grace. After a really gruesome case Danny also showed up at Steve’s place with a six pack of Longboards. She didn’t even want to get started on the secret touches and silent smiles or the fact that sometimes words didn’t even need to be spoken for them to communicate. It was creepy and yet there was something more behind it-, her instincts were telling her that but it wasn’t until she saw them having lunch together in Steve’s office that she saw it-. The laughing, the talking, the closeness. Danny had feelings for Steve and vice versa.

She waited until lunch was over, when Danny walked out of Steve’s office and back to his own. Kono waited for only a few seconds before she followed him inside and closed the door.

“So you like Steve don’t ya?” she asked immediately, causing Danny to look up at her suspiciously.

“Of course I do, he’s my partner,” Danny answered with a nod.

“But you would still like him right, even if he wasn’t your partner.”

“Come again?.”

Kono took a breath and perched herself on the edge of Danny’s desk. “Say you met him on the street,” she began. “You talked for a few minutes, found out you had a lot of things in common, and then he asked you out to dinner. Would you say yes?”

Now he was really confused. “Why would he ask me out?”

“Why are you being so difficult?” growled Kono, crossing her arms.

“‘Cause I wanna know in what twisted world would Steve McGarrett ask me out,” Danny shrugged, leaning back in his chair with a raised eyebrow. He waited patiently, watching Kono’s face flush as she stuttered her words.

“I don’t know...just I don’t know.”

Danny chuckled and ran a hand over his face. He still didn’t know why she was asking him the questions but he was going to answer them. Well, one of them. “Alright, okay, to answer your first and only valid question yes, I think if Steve and I met in a different place and time we would get along and become friends.”

“And go out,” she asked hopefully.

Danny shook his head and looked back down at his paperwork. “Didn’t say that.”

“But would you?”

“Don’t you have paperwork to do rookie?”

“Fine,” huffed Kono as she stood up and walked out of Danny’s office. She glanced over her shoulder to see Danny no longer focused on his paperwork but on Steve who at his desk on his phone. Smirking she made her way to her own office to figure out a way to force Danny and Steve to confess their feelings.

Before Kono could put a plan into motion everything began going down hill. With Steve being framed for murder by Wo Fat, the Lt. Governor assigning a new member to the task force, and her being forced to work undercover with IA, it took some time for the team to find their footing again. But thankfully they did and now Kono was once again thinking of a way of getting Steve and Danny together,. Especially now that the two were living together.

She was watching the two of them from her office when her phone suddenly rang. She didn’t recognize the number but she answered it anyway. “Officer Kalakaua.”

“Hey Kono, it’s me Catherine. Steve’s Catherine,” the voice on the end of the phone replied.

“I know who you are,” snorted Kono as she stood up and closed her office door. “Can I ask why you’re calling me?”

“I need your help. It’s about Steve and Danny.”

“I don’t understand-”

Catherine quickly interrupted her. “Look I’m just gonna cut to the chase. I think Steve is in love with Danny and vice versa and I need help getting those two together.”

“Why do you think that?”

“Seriously,” scoffed Cat. “Have you seen the two of them together? They ooze sexual tension and I think it’s time they did something about it.”

“Because if we left it up to them nothing would ever happen and they’ll be left pining for each other for all eternity,” sighed Kono, sitting back down in her chair. Catherine was right in more ways than one.

“Exactly. Now I’ve tried to get Steve to admit his feeling for Danny but he’s not the most forthcoming when it comes to his feelings.”

“It’s the same with Danny. I’ve been trying to pry it out of him for months now but all he does is beat around the bush before changing the subject.”

“So glad to see we’re on the same page,” laughed Cat. “I think if we work together we can get those two idiots together and all would be right with the world. You in?.”

Kono stared out at Danny and Steve standing close and smiling at each other. She didn’t need any extra time making her decision. “You most definitely called the right girl, Cat. I’m in,” she grinning happily. “Now, tell me what you want me to do.” Kono could hear the smile in Catherine’s voice.

“I thought you’d never ask.”

The moment Danny saw Steve enter the restaurant, dressed liked he just stepped out of GQ magazine, he knew something was up. He had been asked out by Kono as a thank you for helping with the excess amount of paperwork she had to fill out during the last case. At first he was weary about the location she picked but ultimately decided to say yes. After all, it wasn’t often a beautiful woman asked him out to dinner with the full intention of paying for it.

He had arrived a few minutes early and was directed to the table only to find Kono hadn’t arrived yet. Danny shrugged it off. Kono would be there soon, or so he thought. That was until he saw Steve.

Steve walked through the door of the restaurant and immediately noticed Danny. Giving the place a quick glance, he saw that Kono was no where to be found, the sole reason he was at the fancy place dressed how he was. Not knowing what to do, he walked over to Danny’s table. “Danny,” he said, crossing his arms. “What are you doing here?”

Danny let out a light growl and ran a hand through his hair. “I could ask you the same thing but since I already know the answer it would be quite redundant.”

“What? I’m here to meet Kono.”

“So was I but now realized that we’ve been set up.”

“Like on a date,” asked Steve, confused, leaning against the table.

“Of course on a date you goof. How else would you explain the fancy restaurant, the fact that we’re both dressed up, and there’s a bottle of wine already chilling on the table.”

“Damn Danny,” whistled Kono as she stood next to the table, coming out of nowhere. “I can see why you made detective. You’re good.”

Danny stared crossly at her, folding his arms. “Even though I’m extremely pissed at you I’m gonna take that as a compliment.”

“Kono what’s going on here?”

“Well Boss,” began Kono. “If you must know I have grown tired of this little charade between you and Danny so I decided to do something about it.”

“What charade? What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about the two of you and how much you love each other. You may have yourselves fooled, but not us.”

Steve gasped, mouth dropping open slightly. “Wait a minute, who’s ‘us’?” he demanded.

Kono smiled as she pulled her phone out of her pocket and handed it to Steve. “Oh, almost forgot. Steve, for you.”

Taking the phone out of Kono’s hand he held it up to his ear. “Hello.”

“Hello Commander. I hope you enjoy the wine. It’s your favorite and already paid for.”

He was surprised by the voice on the other end of the phone and moved far away from the table, over to the door. “Cath,” hissed Steve quietly. “What the hell is going on?”

“Didn’t Kono explain it to you?,” she replied. “We’re tired of you and Danny not giving in to your feelings so we decided that you needed a push.”

“For the last time Cath, I don’t have feelings for Danny.”

“Really. I’m your best friend Steve and I’ve known you long enough to know when you’re lying. And right now, you are.”

“Catherine-”

“What are you so afraid of? Obviously Danny feels the same way or else he wouldn’t still be sitting there at the table.”

Steve looked over his shoulder to see that Danny was indeed still sitting down at the table. He could feel his heart leap in his chest. “How do you know he’s still sitting down?”

Catherine scoffed. “Because I’m a woman, and therefore smarter than you. It may also have something to do with the fact that he’s in love with you, Steve.”

“You really think so.”

“I know so. Now go back to the table and tell him how you feel or else I’m hopping on the next plane to Hawaii and kicking your ass.”

Steve didn’t want to hold his feelings for Danny in any longer. Especially if there was a chance that Danny felt the same way for him. He knew it was time for him to stop hiding away and let himself go. “You got it,” grinned Steve, hanging up the phone and walking back to the table.

Meanwhile Danny sat at the table, glaring at Kono as she continued smiling at him from across the table. “I can’t believe you set me up,” he hissed bitterly.

Kono simply smirked, biting into a breadstick. “Well, believe it brah.”

“What gave you the right to interfere in my personal life?”

“Because I’m your friend and I’m tired of seeing you so miserable,” she replied sternly, waving the breadstick in his face. “I’ve seen the way you look at Steve when you think he’s not looking.”

Danny sighed heavily as he hung his head. Of course Kono had seen him glazing longingly at Steve and was now using it against him. “I guess you think that makes me an idiot,” he replied softly, not even bothering to look up.

Reaching across the table, she grabbed his hand and squeezed it tightly. “No,” she replied, shaking her head. “What makes you an idiot is the fact that you don’t see that he looks at you the exact same way.”

“He does,” whispered Danny, looking up.

“Danny, if Steve didn’t feel the same way, would he still be here?.”

Looking over her shoulder he saw that Steve was still on the phone and still in the restaurant. He could no longer hide the fact that he did have feelings for his partner but he didn’t want to act on them. It could jeopardize everything he had and he didn’t know if it was worth it. “I can’t get hurt again Kono.”

Kono squeezed his hand again. “Nobody wants that Danny, especially not Steve. You just gotta give him a chance. You owe it yourself that.”

He looked over again to see Steve making his way back to the table, a soft smile on his face. “I guess you’re right,” he replied softly.

“Of course I am,” winked Kono as she stood up, grabbed her phone from Steve, and made her way out of the restaurant.

********

“So.”

“So,” repeated Steve as he played with the buttons on his shirt.

They had been sitting at the table in silence, not saying anything instead glancing at each other when they believed the other wasn’t looking. Finally, Danny couldn’t take it anymore so he took a deep breath and began speaking. “Okay the truth is I’m kinda stupid in love with you and from what Kono just told me you might feel the same way. Was she telling the truth?”

Danny’s honesty caught him off guard. So much so that he didn’t have time to properly form his words before he began talking. “Danny it’s not like that. I’m not-”

His breath hitched, the air being sucked out of his lungs as he stood up. He knew that a relationship with Steve was to good to be true and the last things he needed in his life was more rejection. “I knew this was a terrible idea.”

“Danny wait, don’t go,” pleaded Steve as he reached across the table and grabbed Danny’s hand with no intent of letting it go. “Kono wasn’t lying...it’s just I’m not kinda or sorta in love with you. I am in love with you.”

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

“Why didn’t you?” asked Steve, pouting somewhat.

Danny let out a loud sigh and shrugged. “Because I’m a divorced father who’s afraid of getting hurt again and falling for my presumably straight Navy SEAL partner was not part of my plan to move on with my life. What’s your excuse?”

“I didn’t think you’d feel the same.”

“Well I do.”

“Alright then,” Steve replied smiling, running his thumb against Danny’s knuckles. “What are we gonna do about it?”

“I don’t know,” shrugged Danny again. “I guess we could stay here, order some food, and talk. Or-”

“Or what?”

“Or we can get out of here and go back to your place,” Danny replied with a mischievous smirk, leaning forward slightly.

“Sounds like a plan but first,” Without warning Steve leaned across the table, placed a hand behind Danny’s neck, and pulled him into a kiss. It was everything he dreamed it would be plus more and it made him want to exit the building immediately and get Danny into bed.

Danny let out a slight moan as he kissed Steve back, not caring that they were in public place surrounded by people. He only cared about moving closer to Steve, slipping his tongue inside Steve’s mouth. “Definitely going back to your place,” he whispered when the two of them pulled away, breathless.

Steve smiled as he stood up. Pulling his wallet out of his pocket, he threw a few bills on the table before grabbing Danny’s hand and pulling him up.

“You realize we didn’t order anything right,” teased Danny as he allowed himself to be dragged out of the restaurant.

“Don’t care,” growled Steve, pushing Danny out the door. Once they were outside, he wrapped both arms around Danny’s waist and pulled him into another heated kiss.

Kono stood across the street, phone in hand as she snapped a picture of Steve and Danny kissing. With a smile she sent the photo to Catherine’s phone under the text ‘Mission Accomplished.’
