I got a doggie!

All I wanted to do this long weekend was to sit and write. Instead, I decided to stress myself out by adopting a dog from a semi-local pound.

This isn't the ultimate procrastination ploy.

I've wanted a dog for years, and it's been about 15 years since my last dog. However, I've always lived in a place they've had a ban on dogs. Finally I've moved to a place which there's a weight restriction and I'm surrounded by crazy neighbors.

Anyway, this last week, I had gotten into my head that I needed to adopt a dog, and so I saw a Sheltie mix at a pound and decided to go see him. It was a terrible ordeal to find out where he was, whether he was available, etc, but I at least wanted to check him out, particularly since the nice people at the pound said, "Oh yes, he's scheduled to be euthanized on Saturday."

I'm not exactly sure why anyone would say such a thing.

So I decided to go see him Friday, because I had the day off. I saw a scared little dog, surrounded by large, barking dogs. I took him out and saw that he was shy and submissive, but liked the doggie treats I brought along, (always a sure thing to make canine friends). He's 8-years-old, has kennel cough, is fur and bones -- and the fur's all matted, but he has a sweet temperament. I just know he's a good dog.

Doesn't seem to be housebroken, and he has a distinct fear of stairs. This is awkward since I live on the second floor. He doesn't respond to his name 'Duke', so I'm thinking about changing it. So far, his favorite activities seem to be following me around wherever I go and looking at me with those adorable doggie eyes. He also likes to be brushed.

So we're trying to get him better, give him a bath REAL soon and give him lots of love.
