Okay, so I had a review half-written for seanan_mcguire's Rosemary and Rue and then I decided it sucked and ignored it sitting in the post an entry box and procrastinated updating my LJ to tell everyone I was safe and home from Vancouver without being eaten by moose so I figured I should just write another one now. One that is better.

First things first, general impression: I adored this book. I came out of it with the feeling that there are two things the author does amazingly: descriptions and characters. Everything else was great, but I really adored her descriptive text (and was slightly jealous- I can't write descriptions worth beans) with things like the rose motif throughout the book, and her characters really leapt off the page. I can has Tybalt nao?

I feel like Toby is a really, really good heroine. She's had something truly horrible happen to her (my heart broke when I read it, after I finished cackling about how awesome a twist it was) and now she's being dragged back into the world that caused it. But she's still tough as nails, and a lot of fun.

I did figure out certain aspects of the plot fairly quickly, but once things got going I started to doubt myself. I didn't feel cheated for having it figured out early, though- the plot is thick enough that there's a lot to enjoy.

In the next books, I'm really hoping that some of the less-featured fairy races that were mentioned in Rosemary and Rue get to shine. I want to know what Candela and Gwragen do!

I've already read my ARC twice, and I'll buy a copy when it comes out in September this year- and so should you, if you have any interest in fairies or urban fantasy. I can't wait at all for the next ones.

Also, I'm serious about the Tybalt thing. WANT.
