It had been an...interesting party.
Even De seemed to have enjoyed himself. He had certainly looked, in Bill's estimation, fantastic. Len's accent had been as deeply amusing as his suit had been attractive. And - well -
Bill liked being Jim Kirk, okay? He refused to be ashamed of it. He just hoped nothing unfortunate was going to result from his in-character misbehaviour.
Whether it was the joy of being captain for a night, or what, Bill didn't know, but in the days following the party he felt oddly full of energy. After a couple of days of contemplating it, the question of the replicator's capabilities overwhelmed him finally in the middle of the night, and he was consequently up rather early fiddling with the thing, wondering just exactly how much could be done with it. In his attempts to discover whether it really could replicate anything, he had already achieved a glass of orange juice, a bowler hat, and three small Persian slippers full of pipe tobacco. He was working on a chess set - the lack of one struck him as criminal - when De, bleary-eyed from sleep, walked into the main room.
