Labelling: A Necessary Evil

Dec 15, 2009 14:53

mirroredspock has brought to my attention some concerns about the dangers of labelling people. Now, I'm not that great on this whole issue to begin with - Leonard is always on at me about it - but I'm trying, I really am. I don't want to be that backward guy with his views entrenched in the 20th Century while you're all working on some scheme I know nothing ( Read more... )

I'd describe myself as mostly straight. I wouldn't rule out women, though I'm much more attracted to men.

Thank you.

I can't believe I left that off, seriously. I was probably thinking so hard about putting in all the other obscure designations that I forgot the obvious.

I'm not so sure how obvious it is on this ship. There seems to be only a slight number of straight or mostly straight people on board.

(OOC - I can't believe you missed that, either. LOL!)

Well, I know that both Tina and Christine are straight, and I hang around with them quite a lot, and De is definitely straight, and he is my best friend, and I only conceded that I am actually not straight about a week ago, so, really, I don't have any excuse!

[OOC - :) Oh, that ETA is Bill's. It is his mistake, made deliberately by me, effectively for the implicit lulz. Although the mistake above it - with regard to not enough relationship options - was actually just me. ;)]

Interracial marriage is/was a problem? What kind of crazy, messed up world did you live in?

20th century America, my son. I know you're a Scot, and it was never illegal in the great Mother Country despite all their other bizarre prejudices, but in the US of A, it used to be forbidden.

I made a movie about it once, back in the 60's when the blacks really started fighting for their rights. (I'm Jewish, which never went down well either, so I felt the need to join the rebellion). Didn't go down well. People basically drummed the production company out of town when they discovered we were making a film protesting about the status quo. Hell of a world.

Yeesh. People sure are weird when they want to be, aren't they? I mean, that actually mattered? Next thing you're going to tell me that they would have rounded up Sulu and kept him locked up for some sort of silly reason that is just plain illogical.

...mmm.

Yeah, I actually don't even want to tell you about that. America = land of the weird and prejudiced. Don't ask me. I'm Canadian.

Bill, in your first question, are you asking what do people use them for? Or what I think the point should be?

As to your ETA, Bill... I think it speaks for itself.

Oh, sorry - I mean, what do you think people use them for. I think.

Re: the ETA, this is not my fault. I was being very careful to list all the obscure sexuality-labels i could think of. It took me ages. And then I was so exhausted that I pressed post without adding the obvious one.

I see. Well, those answered would be pretty different, for me.

Uh-huh.

I would further like to say that on most forms, I enter "Human"; that I clicked both "open relationship" options because one of my partners is PSYCHIC; and I am delighted to have my own sexuality.

I'm not sure I'm into guys enough to call myself bi, but I'm definitely into them, so I can't call myself straight. So...yeah.

You have my dilemma exactly, Lt. Riley.

I think the labels matter so little, why worry? What's important is what you feel, right?

canadianbill December 15 2009, 16:22:35 UTC
Well, yeah. Hence my decision to personally not bother calling myself anything.

I'm sure you've been told, but you missed straight off your list, Bill.

And also I would have liked an option of I am NOT Leonard, but I am rolling my eyes at you. Because this is what I always do.

Yes, De. I edited the post to explain this oversight.

And I knew you would be, already. :)

Oh. Well. Somehow I missed that edit.

I love you, Bill.
