MORTAL LIABILITY Chapter 16
Chapter 16
Bella POV:
Edward hugged me to his chest and kissed my face, every once in a while his fingers would run through my hair. Meanwhile Sonia replied to the questions the others had but what alarmed me the most was the dark purple hand mark on her face and arms. Edward distracted me from finding out what had happened up stairs. Sonia looked just as confused as I. I felt Edward’s cold skin on my neck, it raised goose bumps. “Let’s go” he whispered into my ear. His voice was quaky and uneven, what was wrong? He sounded very troubled and distressed. He picked me up and slowly took me to his Volvo. He opened the door with one hand (holding me with the other) and set me down in the passenger seat. Slammed the door shut and in seconds he was starting the engine.
“What’s wrong?” I asked looking at him. He turned his head to stare at me, his expression changed to object my question, but his eyes remained troubled. “What makes you say that?” he asked his voice now smooth like velvet. “Oh-uh, nothing you were just in a strange mood” I replied quickly. I decided I should ask him later, it’s been a bad day for both of us. Today faintly reminded me of my eighteenth birthday…his mood was somewhat familiar, only he seemed to want me closer.
When we pulled up in my driveway, he opened my door for me “Meet me in my room?” I smiled
“Always” he finally cracked a smile, my heart leaped, but it didn’t seem to reach his eyes. He kissed me on the cheek and worked his way back to his side of the Volvo. I walked up to my front door and watched him leave. It took me a couple moments to notice Charlie’s car was parked in the driveway. How long have I been gone? I opened the front door and walked in, I heard the T.V on in the living room. “Bella?” he called
“Yah”
“You’re late”
“Sorry Dad, it won’t happen again, I promise” I assured him, I could hear him mutter something. “There’s pizza in the kitchen” he sighed
“Okay” I replied.
I walked into the kitchen and sure enough there was pizza. I grabbed a slice and ate it quickly. Afterwards I cleaned my plate and put it away.
I walked upstairs and into my room. I was surprised to see Edward sitting cross legged in the center of my bed. He was early. But of course I didn’t mind this one bit. “You’re early!” I said trying not to give too much energy. He smiled “Yes I am”, I walked over and sat next to him. He grabbed my waist and pulled my effortlessly onto his lap. He kissed various places on my face until I finally said “Give me a minute”.
I hopped up, grabbed my toiletries and headed straight to the bathroom. I took my shower, brushed my teeth and got dressed in a pair of my old pajamas. I rushed back to my room, not willing to waist one second with Edward.
When I entered the room again he smiled. I smiled in return and I sat next to him again. He leaned into me and whispered “You should sleep”, I looked up at him and he kissed my forehead. He picked me up and laid me in my bed. He disappeared and I felt his cold skin against my neck. I rolled around to face him. I opened my mouth to say something, but he lightly placed a finger over my lips. He kissed me on the side of my mouth and began to hum my lullaby. His voice was smooth like velvet and flowed like honey, I already felt drowsy. He brushed my hair out of my face and began to trace my cheek bone with his index finger. “Will you be there in the morning?” I asked; my words came out in a clumsy slur. “You are my life, you always will be” he whispered gently. I smiled, not exactly a yes, but I knew he meant it. “I love you” he whispered, and he returned to his lullaby, I couldn’t seem to speak out and reply. I closed my eyes and I drifted off into sleep.
I woke up to a cold sensation on my face. I forced my eyes open, my eyes burst open when Edward came into focus. Why was he here? He wasn’t usually here in the morning on weekdays. “Good morning” he smiled
“Hi” I replied, he kissed my cheek and then placed his hand on the side of my face. The sudden cold woke me up immediately. “What are you doing here? Your early, is the Volvo here?” I asked starting to sit up.
“Why shouldn’t I be here? Is this a problem?”
“No! No, it’s just, this doesn’t usually happen…on weekdays” I blurted out a little too loudly. He smiled, reached over and grabbed a lock of my hair; he began to fiddle with it. “Did you bring the Volvo?” I asked
“No, I thought we’d use your car today” he answered with a smile, I frowned. We almost never used my car. I tore my gaze away from his face to look at what he was wearing. He didn’t leave tonight; he wore the same cloths as yesterday. “You didn’t leave last night, did you?” I said. I glanced back up to stare at his face. His cheery mood dimmed a bit. “Yes” he sighed, I smiled to myself. Moved away from me and off the bed, I followed. “You should get dressed” he suggested, I nodded.
I quickly chose out an outfit “I’ll meet you downstairs” I said, turning around to face him. He smiled and kissed me “Of course” he smiled. I grinned in return and then I rushed to the bathroom.
As I wanted, Edward was waiting for me in the kitchen; he had already prepared my breakfast. He stood when I entered the room. I walked into him. He sat me down in a chair and pulled it as close it possible to his chair. When he let go of me I noticed his sleeve was a different colour. I looked over his cloths again, they were different now. “Eat” Edward instructed me, my gaze flashed to his unexplainable face and to my cereal.
*************
At school I was surprised to see Sonia. With the hand mark on her face, people would think she was being beaten. But when Edward and I approached Alice and her I noticed she had a big white bandage across her face where the bruise was. “Hi” I greeted, Alice smiled widely “Good morning, Bella” she sang. Sonia nodded. I guessed she must have been pretty upset about what happened yesterday. “I should go, class will be starting soon” Sonia said dully and she walked away. I checked my watch; we still had about ten minutes.
“Was she like this, this morning?” Edward asked Alice
“Yup, that’s the first thing she’s said today” Alice sighed, shaking her head. “What happened with Ellen? Do you know what happened?” he asked another question
“Apparently she just really needed to...” she glanced at me “feed” she looked back at Edward. He nodded a bit. “What happened?” I asked worriedly
“I’ll tell you later, Bella” he whispered in my ear. His breath fanned across my face, I smiled. “Okay” I replied absentmindedly. “I didn’t think that would happen though, especially to Ellen” Alice continued the conversation between Edward and her. “I agree, she’s older than I am, isn’t she?” Edward added
“Carlisle finds it very understandable, she only cut off from human…blood last week, and he believes it must be hard for her, she went hunting last night, she feels terrible about what happened” Alice sighed the last part. Even though I had no idea what this conversation was about I could relate. I remembered when Ellen talked to me, her eyes weren’t red anymore; they were a dark topaz. I stared up at Edward; he had an unconvinced expression on his face.
The bell rang, and Edward and I made our way to our first class. We passed Sonia a couple time in the morning when we walked to our next class. At lunch, Edward and I were the first ones at our table. He told me what happened last night between Sonia and Ellen.
Alice was the next one to join us; Sonia came late, well later than usual. “Hi” she greeted quickly as she sat down next to Alice. “Hey, how was your day so far?” I asked, trying to lighten her mood. She looked up at me “Annoying”
“Why? What happened?” I asked, now trying to keep the conversation alive, she pointed at the bandage on her face. “Does it hurt?” Alice joined in
“No, people are asking too many questions” she sighed “They won’t leave me alone” she added.
There was a long pause of silence while Sonia and I ate. “Sonia can I talk to you for a moment please?” I heard a woman’s voice, I looked up to see the principal standing over Sonia; whose eyes were wide, and she mouthed something I couldn’t understand. Alice was staring at Sonia. “Uh-Yah” Sonia said standing up; she walked away with the principal to an empty part of the cafeteria. He was looking over at Sonia, but he turned his head to watch me. I knew he was listening to their conversation; I glanced at Alice, so was she. A couple moments passed and they both suddenly smiled and started to laugh a bit, it died shortly afterwards. I smiled “What happened? What are they saying?” I whispered. I wasn’t sure why I was whispering. Sonia was walking back now.
“I’ll tell you in the car” Edward said quickly.
She sat down and took in everybody’s questioned expressions. “It was self defense, he started it” she said out of no where. “What happened?” Alice ordered, Sonia glared at Alice for a moment but then she started to talk. “They were asking me what happened to my face, and this one guy in my last class assumed my dad was beating me. I threatened him, then he ‘clearly’ shoved me first and we got in a fight…like I said it was self defense, I didn’t do anything” she told the story, Alice smiled “You got in a fight? Did he get hurt?”
“Kinda”
“What did you do?”
“I just tripped him over and stuff so he couldn’t attack me, nothing serious. If I do it again I have detention, I have to see her in her office after I eat” she sighed.
