Part two of my ridiculously long comment...

As re the marriage with Mary: In my story, Watson fools almost everyone with her disguise - Holmes being one of the few exceptions. Holmes isn't in love with Watson, but greatly enjoys contravening Victorian convention, even though they aren't lovers. Mary is one of the few people who sees through Watson's disguise; Mary is desperately unhappy, because her parents are trying to force her to marry, and Mary isn't interested in men. Watson seems like a miracle to her - a woman in the guise of a man! Mary falls in love, and makes it her business to seduce Watson. Watson is at first frightened, until she realizes that Mary has figured out her true gender, and isn't expecting a man. Marrying Watson seems like a great deal more freedom to Mary than any other kind of marriage - Victorian women actually had pathetically few legal rights. Mary's first thought is to get Watson to teach her how to behave like a man, until she realizes she'll have to leave her family behind; then she plumps for marriage.

I'm basing "my" Watson on Margaret Bulkley. She's third down on this list: http://www.cracked.com/article/187_6-people-who-got-away-with-living-implausible-lie/

Two things drastically change the relationship between Holmes and Watson: first, Holmes' supposed death at the Falls; second, Mary's death while Holmes is "gone." Watson is alone and despondent when Holmes returns; she realizes that her affection for Holmes was as deep as her affection for Mary, and now both the loves of her life are gone. She greets Holmes' return with a mixture of delight and fury - she's thrilled he's back, but furious that he played that trick on her. They take rooms together again, but can't just go back to being pals - for Watson, it simply won't do.

What has me stalled is that I can't decide where Watson IS when Holmes returns: did she, in fact, go back to Scotland, take up women's garb, and become Lady Hannay? Or did she stay in London, living as a man? I like the idea that Holmes would have to go and look for her. Can't decide. So the first story, "Clothes Make the Man," is currently stalled, but the second story, "Jack and the Badgers," is nearly finished. It's so heavily dependent on the first that I can't post it, though.

Yay, article!

I loved reading that cracked article but I was kind of annoyed that she was so low on their list. Come on; that was awesome.

I'd also love to read whatever you'd be willing to give me! I personally would think that Watson would remain in London because she's been doing what she is because that is WHO she is but that's my personal opinion.

I agree - on all counts! MB should have been MUCH higher up on that list, and I'm fairly sure Watson would have stayed in London - that's pretty much the assumption I make in the second story. Which I will happily send to you! Just IM me your email. :D
