I don't often get this wordy on situations I can't change (this TV series is going to happen or not completely without my input) but there is so much speculation on the matter sitting on either side of the fence and it just seemed like people were going for either 'no! Watson is a man! If he isn't then the dynamic chaaaanges' as if a change in character dynamic is inherently bad or 'No! They will turn it into a romance' which makes me want to remind the fandom that they are almost rabid about Sherlock and John being a couple to the point where I avoid the fandom and while I too dislike the idea of the show turning into The Holmes and Watson UST Hour there is a possibility it wont.
/flails hands at you. I have FEELINGS OF FRUSTRATION with fandom, Sky. FEELINGS.
I also have lots and lots of feelings on the power inequality in Sherlock in general and how it will translate over when you suddenly make the already less dominant character into someone who is traditionally placed in a position as a powerless (or near-powerless) minority (two-fold! Female and Chinese-American; the issues abound!). There are so many ways that could play out and there are really interesting ways you can weave bits of that into the story in little ways because omg, Sky, omg Sherlock can pick out all the little details of human reaction and wouldn't it be awesome if they had him occasionally pick out little reactions that are all about prejudice and the reactions that occur in response and that could make the audience think. Even just having this happen once and because of the power dynamic issue he feels inclined to defend his Watson and doesn't understand why Watson doesn't appreciate it and lkdjflkfglkglfdkgjdfg OKAY. OKAY. I HAVE FEELINGS. I don't want Watson to be HBIC. I hate the term HBIC, by the way. I really, really do. I want Watson to be a competent character who is occasionally frustrated with the world around her but is willing to play the game because what else is she going to do and also I want her to be a human with humane reactions who just so happens to know how to handle herself in a fight and gets to rescue Sherlock some. Not all the time. But some. Because WHY. NOT.
....Oh. Uh. I talked a lot again. Sorry. FEELINGS.
THAT THIRD PARAGRAPH, BASICALLY I WANT ALL OF THIS TOO.
but my cynical view of tv makes me pretty sure it won't happen. ugh. (what i want to see is a sherlock holmes where everyone is genderswapped.) (can you imagine how many people would flip out if they'd make sherlock a woman? a logical, brilliant woman?)
YES. SEE. Mmmm. This is sort of why I like reboot Kono from Hawaii 5-0 even if goddammit she is used for teh sexah a lot. For one because a lot of the time she still kicks ass and is as crazy as Steve while somehow having more common sense and also the show has actually pointed out that she's getting the crap jobs and that it is crap. Sometimes I get frustrated with the outfits she wears undercover but I love that her everyday outfit is ...jeans. and a tank. EXACTLY what the male characters wear.
See, see, Genderswapped Sherlock would be so cool BUT I think they're seeing it as an issue of Genderswapped Sherlock being portrayed as ... Bones Brennan. And I can see how that would be an issue for TV producers because that is exactly what an audience is going to say. 'I might as well watch Bones'. They can't make money off that right now. I know the characters are completely different with different anti-socialization issues and personal growth arcs that are going to be vastly different but what the average audience is going to see is 'Genius woman with inability to properly process human emotional interactions who have a sidekick who is constantly awed and yet exasperated with their partner.
I wonder if Lestrade will be female, male, minority or not. It makes less of a difference in the long run for Lestrade to be anything other than mainstream Lestrade except that making the DC female gives someone to empathize with Watson who isn't Irene because Irene works on a completely different level then Watson and I think Lestrade would be a really interesting buddy for Watson either way.
omg now all I can think about is character interactions and Mrs Huddson being a Mister or even just Mrs Huddson being her strange mixture of old-culture and new-culture and how that would mesh with female Watson and omg omg the LIVING ARRANGEMENTS ISSUE IS JUST SO WONDERFUL. 'Not your chaperone, dear.' 'He's a little strange, dear; you don't have a thing to worry about, living here.'
