BACKGROUND:
Dune has a rather sprawling, interwoven, timeline. Without past information the present makes no sense. ...Sorry.
Leto and Jessica married: 1835
Paul born: 1836
Alia born: 1844. Paul is 8.

Leto Atreides I is old Boston blood and newer Boston money. In May of 1835 Leto marries Jessica Harkonnen, the illegitimate offspring of a Northern/Eastern European lord (Vladmir Harkonnen). Jessica is in the states, a very respected member of the popular Spiritualist movement, bringing with her old world knowledge of things like card reading, spirit walking. She herself cannot invite ghosts in.
Some time later Paul is born and of course some time after that Alia is born as well -- Jessica has been dipping her fingers lightly into opium at that point in time having discovered that it expands her abilities. She never takes enough to really overcome her strong will but Alia is born with a gleam in her eye that isn't natural. Jessica weans herself off the substance but never really manages to remove Alia's taste for it, though she expressly forbids her daughter to partake.
The Atreides family, already dabbling in the opium trade anger the mobsters and are basically removed to the Territories; the explanation being that they are 'expanding the trade' but is really an exile of sorts. Paul is already attending a boarding school and so only visits their new home twice a year (less then that, after he reaches his majority) until, when he's twenty-one, Leto I dies in a bar fight. Paul returns home to run the newspaper (and secondary trade) in his father's stead. It's then he discovers that the wild-child daughter of a hunter he'd once played with has grown into just as wild a beautiful woman. He marries her against Jessica's advice and just over three years later they're expecting a son.
Chani, unfortunately, finds herself in huge amounts of pain; unable to keep most food down. She and the baby are in danger of dying. It's discussed among the family and decided that they'll mix minute amounts of opium into her food to help deaden the pain and make eating easier. She lasts through the birth but dies soon after; her body unable to take the strain of the addiction and blood loss caused by the combined affects of the opium and acetylsalicylic acid she'd been dosed with during the labor. Paul follows soon after of a broken heart.
Jessica, unable to stay in the country that took her husband and son, returns to her homeland. Alia remains behind, stubbornly refusing to leave the businesses her father and brother had created and fiercely sure that her niece and nephew are to stay with her. Jessica, defeated and tired, leaves without them.
Alia, sure that the ghosts will whisper their secrets to her if only she can listen closer, slowly takes more and more of the opium. When the twins are eleven she sends them away to board and attend school in Boston at Irulan's (a private facility which accepts both boys and girls in a family setting), unable to take the knowing looking in the children's eyes, for while Jessica had just dipped her fingers in the opium during Alia's conception, Chani had been nearly saturated in the substance by the time the twins were born.
And so present day rolls in. Ghani has been back in Dustdevil for two years.
PERSONALITY:
Ghanima is a much different person when she's with her brother alone then she is in the company of others. Both twins have inherited the wild independence of their mother -- Ghani is just more likely to let it lose in a whirlwind of violent temper. The polite setting of her later upbringing has allowed her a veneer of civility and a more controlled grace but it could all be lost should someone threaten the well-being of her twin or their plans for the future.
POWER/SKILL:
The twins can see and hear ghosts -- not usually both at the same time, sometimes only seeing them out of the corner of their eyes or hearing a whispered word here or there -- but the ability isn't stable or constant; it gutters in and out like a candle's flame and they're perfectly all right with that for the time being. They've seen what it's doing to their aunt and despite her urgings have no need to increase the frequency of the occurrences.
