I only half-watched the Wimbledon ladies' final, partly as it clashed with Bahrami & co playing silly buggers on the outside courts (hehe) and partly as I didn't have any real preference as to the winner, but it seemed a good match - glad it went to three sets and no-one got completely steamrollered. I wanted Krejcikova to win once she'd seen a couple of match points come and go (it would be too cruel to come that close and then lose!) and happily she managed it on the third attempt. The legacy of Jana Novotna, who mentored her! (She cried looking at their names on the champions board, awww.) Lovely post-match interviews from both her and Jasmine Paolini - I think that's the first time I've heard anyone thank the ball kids! I saw a bit of the epic men's doubles final too, eventually won by Henry Patten and his Finnish partner who was sobbing on his shoulder for ages, LOL!
Then the men's singles... I very much wanted it to be over before the football, so I was a little concerned when the very first game lasted 14 minutes!! I was dreading another five-set battle and possibly the revenge of Novak, but thankfully Carlos thrashed him in three this time! He had me a bit worried when he choked while serving for the match, but he managed to get it done in the tie-break. Some impressive shots along the way, too. LOL at the entire crowd misinterpreting Annabel's "hot" remark about him!
I thought the Euro 2024 final was a decent match, pretty close overall. I would've loved the fairytale ending for Gareth and it was definitely possible, but we never looked *that* likely to win, so I didn't get too excited and therefore it didn't hurt too much (though it's a little agonising that we couldn't take that chance right at the end!). I'm glad we did at least have our brilliant equaliser to celebrate, and they beat us fair and square without any controversial decisions going against us. Spain are always one of my teams so I'm happy enough to see them win it. England just getting to the final was *so* much better than I ever expected!!
Btw, I wish I could receive a pound coin for every time the pundits say the word "quality". Shearer especially was doing my head in with the number of times he said it tonight - he's either doing it for a bet or he needs a thesaurus!! Don't make it a drinking game or you'll die of alcohol poisoning before half time.
