I love books. I love all books. I remember reading Black Beauty when I was 10. I can't remember any specific books before then. I know I was a "reader" from a young age. I got it from my mom who I remember always reading when I was a kid. Before I went to sleep at night I'd lay in bed with mom and we'd read our books together. I was about 9 or 10 years old. After Black Beauty came Judy Blume books like Are You There God, It's Me Margaret*. I started collecting The Baby Sitter's Club books since they were first published at the time I was around 11.
And it continued from there. Christopher Pike and R.L. Stine (pre-Goosebumps) led to Stephen King. I remember reading Misery when I was 12/13. I have a picture of me reading it on a page of the scrapbook my mom made for me. The page is titled "The Need To Read" and has 5 different pictures of me, book in hand. I use to read my mom's naughty Jackie Collins books but I steered away from sappy Danielle Steel.
Now I read anything. I love classics, children's literature, historical fiction, best sellers, chic lit, deeper books, and even young adult. I am not a fast reader, I savor every word in a book. I'm not keen on non-fiction unless they are about crazy lives like David Sedaris or people with multiple personalities like When Rabbit Howls.
When I was 13 I attempted It by Stephen King after watching the movie. I had read a couple of his books by that point but It scared the poop out of me and I didn't get far. I like scary books but I can't look at their covers in the evening and I can't read them when I'm alone at night. I did read It a few years ago. I ended up with nightmares. Pennywise is an incredibly frightening character.
I was fortunate enough to fall in love with a man who loves reading too. For the first six months we lived together we didn't have cable so we read a lot. I miss the days of curling up with my hubby to read. I wasn't working and Chris was working a lot so I made many trips to the library and brought stacks of books home. Chris is a book snob and likes hardcovers so our budget for books is a bit high. When we buy a house we want built-in book shelves for our collection. It isn't very big yet, but it is growing. Not including a handful of paper backs we have a couple hundred books between 3 pretty full book cases. I still have some stored in Canada.
Anyone want to recommend a book to me?
What is your favourite book now?
What about when you were young?
*Judy Blume note:
I was never a fan of the younger J.B. books like Fudge, I did end up loving her young adult books, my favourite being Tiger Eyes. I never was able to figure out why my mom wouldn't let me read Wifey. Turns out J.B. writes adult books as well. As an adult I finally bought Wifey and read it. I wouldn't have understood what was actually going on if I had read it when I was younger. I told Chris about this way back in the day. He started calling me "Wifey" as a joke and it sort of stuck.
