Smallville 9x16 - Escape

If you watched it, I think you know what's coming...

Okay. So. Fun, lighthearted episode, for the most part, which is nice. It was quite as good as Hex was overall, but it was close.

I'll start up front by saying that once again, a DC character was seemingly sidelined and not used to their full potential, much like I thought the Wonder Twins were in Idol. Also, despite the fact that the Silver Banshee looked pretty much exactly like she does in the comics, the vision didn't appear to transition to live action very well. She looked way too silly. All that aside, I do like the continuation of having all these characters popping up, as it now accurately represents the stage and world that Clark now lives in.

Oliver, for all intents and purposes, was useless. That doesn't mean he wasn't funny, and you all know I love me some funny Ollie, but he had no real place in this story aside from comic relief. And although I really don't mind Chlollie in theory, I wasn't feeling it in this episode.

Chloe was about as good as I could have hoped for. She wasn't overly annoying and got to play some humour as well, which was very nice to see. I also liked the cousinly chemistry with Lois. But again, as with Oliver, her entire presence seemed forced and unnecessary, not to mention the plot didn't in any way match her supposed point of view. Um, Chloe? If you want a no-strings-attached relationship? You don't go to a romantic B&B. You also don't flip out when the guy gets you a present when he is also your friend (unless you actually open it and it's diamonds, or something). I was afraid that they might be trying to make Oliver more serious about this than he should be, but recent finale spoilers have convinced me that's not where this is going.

Lois was... well, Lois. I liked the way ED played this episode. I can see her being happy for Chloe and Oliver and I was impressed that she seemed to be the only one who realized there's no way those two can have no-strings. I liked Lois' anxiousness, knowing full well why Clark had taken them for a weekend getaway, but still being nervous about it. I liked that Lois is Always Prepared (boyscout shoutout!) by having a suitcase packed for any scenario, even having her passport at the ready if required. The only thing that bugged was the ending with Zodblur. Not that she didn't realize she was being played, but the dialogue was awful, especially with Clark standing five feet away.

And here it is...

OMG TESSOD. *FLAILFLAILFLAIL* It was almost perfect. Almost. But I'll take almost perfect. Just, how much more badass can Tess get? Seriously? I am so anticipating a major downfall for her, likely in Sacrifice, but for now MAN IS SHE AWESOME. STILL. I have no clue why she though Zod had his powers, though. All her reasons had to do with information she'd just got from him, yet she came armed with a gun AND green K. Obviously, she had her suspicions when she asked him to meet her, but why? Again, no idea, but I can't let it bother me. I am just so giddy they let her be smart and most of all prepared, knowing she might be going up against a powered Zod.

And Zod's motives are glaringly obvious: he's jealous of Clark, just as Tess figured out. Clark has the people, the accolades, he "rules" Tess' thoughts. Zod wants that for himself. It wasn't about Tess, until she had something that could take him down. And their respective reactions after the sex were telling as well. Zod is doing this to get information. Tess is doing this to assert her dominance. And she also clearly enjoyed herself, so I say this is win all around for Tess. Add in she got him to kneel before her - literally - and I couldn't have been happier with my ship. SQUEE.

Clark was just downright adorable in this episode, although I have to admit, I did let my Tessod squee overshadow him a little. But he was still so much love, from planning a weekend for him and Lois, to wanting to respect Chlollie's privacy and give them space, to expressing his concerns to Oliver - concerns drawn from lessons Clark has learned himself - to the HYSTERICAL shower scene and being quite obviously only concerned for Chloe as a friend, to having the "sex talk", to being blatantly turned on by Lois in her Highland outfit (and really, just Lois in general), to being the one who puts himself on the line to go save the people in danger, to not being upset or mopey that the weekend didn't turn out as planned and asserting himself once again to indicate that Lois really is The One. And Tom played it all with brilliant subtlety. His maturity and confidence just keeps growing and I love every minute of it.
