The Week, Briefly

May 28, 2005 22:23

Monday: No events worthy of mention.

Tuesday: Had to run retreat for a freshman class. Twenty obnoxious freshmen who did not want to be at St. Benedict's with us. Every single one on retreat had Attention Deficit Disorder. Accidentally hit three hundred pound ghetto-ly attired freshman in the face with a dodgeball while trying to hit Adam. Knocked off his goofy-looking baseball cap with the unbent brim which had been stylishly tilted to the side. Apologized. Freshman threatened physical violence. Nothing came of it. Played wiffle ball at lunch. Struck out. Much laughter. Not very good at wiffle ball. Finished retreat, returned to school, and went home on bus. Avoided math test.

Wednesday: Every class was three hours long. Senior class attempted some sort of prank. Obviously not very successful, since no one clear on what prank was, exactly.

Thursday: Shirt was inside-out. Pretty much set tone for rest of day. All materials disappeared from bag somehow. Reappeared in bag after school. Pat Fuller convinced that Spanish teacher is attracted to him. Sort of weird.

Friday: Army people were at gym class. Tried to recruit students for National Guard. Made little speech, left out a lot. The speech, with brackets around what they forgot to mention:
"If you join, you can go to any state university free. All you have to do is work a few weekends, and when you do you get paid $400 for it. [You could die.] Plus you get to choose what you want to do. You like computers? We set you up working on computers. You want to blow things up? We teach you how to blow things up. [You might end up in some oil-rich foreign country and die there.] You can sign up now even, if you're seventeen. We pay up to $9000 dollars per year for a private high school education if you sign up while in high school. [Wars do happen once in a while. In fact, we've got a nice little one going right now. You might have to go fight in one of those and while you might think it's fun to have a gun, it's important to remember that everyone else in a war has a gun too, and they're all eager to shoot you. Dying before you hit twenty doesn't sound like fun, does it?] Well, good luck with your classes, and hopefully we'll see you in a uniform sometime. [And remember boys, this isn't something to be taken lightly. It's not as glamorous as our little speech may have led you to believe. People really do die fighting wars.]
After school Friday, rode bus to library. Realized en route that I had forgotten the cell phone and would not be able to call Morgan for a ride to SHS. Ended up walking from the library, which wasn't terribly long anyway. Only felt long while walking. Springfest was fun enough. Mike's band was very good. Physics teacher's band was very impressive. Checked with Cory about basketball. Summer league starts the 20th supposedly. Left around 8:00ish. Caught ride back to la casa with the eldest Holmes, who now has a garbage can in his trunk.
