Aeryn was discovering that after spending a year and a half at a job she hated, getting up early to come in even when you didn't have to for a job you liked was kind of nice. Especially when the alternative was trying to plan class from home while chasing after a tiny child who insisted on walking now

"I just gave my first detention of the semester," Anakin announced from the doorway, rolling his eyes. "Why do they insist on being idiots?"

"Because they're teenagers," Aeryn said, looking up. "What happened?"

"One insisted on getting the last word," Anakin replied, "even after I requested for him to stop speaking. It's not that hard a request to follow."

Yeah, Little Miss Military Born couldn't argue that reasoning. She'd do the same thing. "He'll learn. Or get more detentions," she said. "It's only week two, after all."

"He was a step up from the one last year who kept saying dumb things like 'I don't care, give me an other one,'" he replied. "Of course, I would. It's not my weekends I was wasting."

Aeryn frowned. "There should be a reason for rebellion, it shouldn't happen just because," she said. Then again, she'd been thrown out of the military and sentenced to death for that. She took it seriously. "I already much prefer my class."

"You let them shoot things?" he asked. "I heard that on the radio."

"I did. Not all of them were comfortable with it, so I gave them a non-violent option and there were no problems. We'll see how long the non-violent option seems like a good idea when something attacks." Shhh, she worried about her kids.

Anakin nodded. "I see Raven weekly in my office," he said. "We're working on some of the harsher aspects of acclimating here. Her world sounds really, really peaceful. I think I'd hate it."

Aeryn nodded her agreement on that one. "She does concern me, coming from somewhere like that. She's trying, though, and that says a lot. I was honestly surprised she stayed in class this week. She didn't have to."

"She is very interested in learning about the world here," he said, "and driven by a need to understand and remove pain." He frowned. "I worry about what will happen when we get invaded next."

"We hope she's prepared enough," Aeryn said. "It's difficult to relate to. I was raised with violence. Defense at the very least is second nature. The students who didn't shoot... it's harder to relate."

Anakin nodded. "She's an empath--and a powerful one. I'm working on her shielding as fast as I know how."

"I can offer absolutely no assistance on that front," she told him.

[sith_happened]

He smiled. "I know, but you can watch my back while I'm watching hers."

He trusted maybe a handful of people that far.

"Cover I can do," she agreed. "Even if it's the kind without weapons..."
