This is a common question at all interviews. Why join us? Why leave your current company? What's so different between your current company and us? Why choose us?
My answer is, firstly, I want to do something where the needy benefit from my work. My hard work should not cause a share price increase, where only the shareholders and executive board are happy people. I've had enough of that. In today's business world, there is so much talk of profit and growth. But to whose benefit? Why the need for such a huge profit and growth? What is the purpose of growing and making so much money? For you to buy more houses? More luxurious cars? When will it ever be enough? We as the employees, will always be working our butts off, and not getting any return for our sweat, while you in the management already raking in huge sums continue to take in more!
Secondly, I want to work with like-minded folks who share the same passion for this cause. We know that work alone doesn't give us satisfaction, and neither does the people factor alone. But the people factor is definitely a reason why many of us stay and do the shit work. However, combine the 2, and you have a powerful, resonating, and compelling motivation. Imagine where that will lead!!! And it is because I have found these 2 factors in this organization, that I choose to believe in and sweat for.
It is also because of these 2 very reasons that disturb me so, when I hear any of them feeling frustrated. While they don't question the reason for doing what we do, it's understandable that they get discouraged. I mean, everybody gets disheartened every once in a while, especially if various facets of our life challenges culminate in one go. Nobody questions the cause, but we might lose sight of it, in the muck and dire work we face daily.
I felt very sad each time I spoke with them and they shared. I think this is another reason why I'm here. So far, I don't have those "I want to quit!" feelings, or at least I know I'm not feeling it now. How I'm working now is similar to my first few years in my previous job, so it's not much of a problem for me. I'm pretty enthusiastic for this cause. Children have always been very special to me, and I've been hanging onto this same cause for the last decade, so it's definitely not an overnight thing. But now, the thing in my face, are the folks around me. I want so much for us to work towards a common goal, but yet, they're a bit stuck in their load, and it seems like they're in quicksand. The more they struggle, the farther they sink, and I'm helplessly watching and can't do anything to help. All I can do now is pray, and wait for the miracle from God.
Jesus, may You watch over each and everyone of them. I can't help, but You can. Thank You for placing this burden in my heart for each of them, so I will be reminded to pray for them. Grant them the strength they require to face their challenges. Grant them wisdom to devise solutions and effective action plans to their work. Remind them of the reason why they're working so hard. Never let them forget the faces of children who have died from poverty, whom they have met in the ADP, whom they sponsor, whom they have in person, and whom they have seen in video clips. Never let them forget the smiles of those who have benefitted from the work they do. Grant them patience to wait through while their actions take time to produce result. And cover them with your blanket of love and protection. Watch over their coming and their going, and bless them with success in all that they do. In Your Name we pray, Amen!
