Well, as far as the PRECISE reasoning, I'm not entirely sure. But what I can tell you is that they believe a lot of stuff is "the devil," or of "the devil."
Perfect example is me. I was born as a completely left-handed person. Well, in Romania it's considered to be "the devil" to be left-handed (mind you this was back in the day). So when I was young and in school they would always take the pen from my left hand and move it to my right. To this day I throw with my left but write with my right. I can write with my left but it's obviously not as clean as with my right.
So they're just extreme about things. Who knows. You might be exposed to something at the theater that you shouldn't be exposed to.

You know, my Mom went through that bullshit.
She's left-handed and in school they would make her sit on her left hand and write with her right. Finally, my Grandma went down there and pitched a fit...they stopped, but always treated her differently.
I thought it was just a West Virginian, country bumpkin thing...
