Come and knock on our door..

As I was on the train yesterday, I noticed something.  Bars (the drinking establishments) never have many windows (one large one in the front, maybe).  So I began to wonder why.  I don't think I have an answer, but I'm curious as to the reasoning behind it.  I think we first need to think about what's happening in this situation: a group of people are in one place; this group is intoxicating their bodies; this group may be louder than the outside public; this group may be "different" from the outside public; and this group may be involved in activities the outside public would not be interested in.  So, essentially, this is an inverse of a zoo.  However, the inside participants cannot see out either.  So, really, it's not.  It's therefore like a temporary prison cell.  You (the outsider) are not allowed to look in and they (the drunkards) are not allowed to look out.  The two are far too different therefore segregation is necessary.

But what else?  It's dark in there.  Is this to set the mood for the people drinking?  Dark.  Dreary.  Moody.  Is that wise, especially when someone is drinking?  Yeah, how about we make them feel like ass even more (assuming they're there drinking because they have problems) than they already do....it's good for business.  So you have a bartender who stands behind his counter making small-talk and pretending to "help" everyone and their problems, but really he's secretly creating the problem.  But maybe he's not the cause of this, since he didn't design this building and he's probably not the owner of the place.  I'm sure the show on TV is probably something manly, of course, like sports....to boost the morale of this desperate human being.  But really, there's nothing that can be done at that point because everything becomes neutralized by this dead atmosphere.  Poor people.
