It wasn’t until Evan made the tower in the center of town light up that the villagers turned against them. All he had done was touch it and it started glowing. They didn’t have a chance to see what it did before people were tossing stones and starting to chase after them as they tried to retreat. They were only a few feet from the Gate when the mob caught up to them and they were pulled back, taken back into the city and tossed in a cell.
“Every one ok?”
“Reed got hit in the head… he might be concussed,” Coughlin told him. “He’s pretty out of it.”
“Keep an eye out for him. They’ll miss us before long and we can get the hell out,” Evan told him, feeling sore and bruised from the stones pelting him. “David?”
“I’m fine… Just hurting,” he said, looking a little dazed.
Evan looked him over, checking for a concussion.
David smiled tightly. “I’m fine, Evan. I promise… Just sore,” he told him softly.
Nodding, Evan settled back, waiting for them to come and hoping that a team came after them, quickly.

As several of the villagers entered the cell, Evan, David and Coughlin all stood, eyeing the weapons held up towards them as the leader looked upon the three, only glancing over to see Reed who was still prone. “Which one of you caused the light.”
“I did,” David said loudly.
“He’s lying, I was the one who touched it,” Evan said, angry that David would put himself in harm’s way like this.
“They’re both lying. It was me,” Coughlin spoke up, not inclined to let either of them be stupid.
The villagers looked at them, surrounding each one as the leader approached David, stabbing him in the gut and bringing the knife across his gut. Evan yelled out but they held him back, not letting him get to David or kill each and every one of those sons of bitches in the cell. The leader left them, wiping the blood off his blade, having appeased whatever twisted sense of justice these fuckers had. The rest of the villagers’ then left, leaving Evan, Coughlin and Reed alone as David bled out.
“God, don’t… Just hold on, David,” Evan said as he wrapped his arms around David. “Please…. Just hold on.”
“Evan… It hurts. It hurts so bad…” David groaned as he clutched his wound.
“Just hold on, please David, please. Just hold on,” Evan begged.
David reached out, cupping Evan’s neck, pain written on his face as tears streamed out of his eyes. “I love you, Evan. I love you so much. Don’t… don’t stop. Don’t let this end you…”
“Don’t make me promise something like that,” Evan told him, anguished.
“I love you.”
“I love you too, David, I love you so much,” Evan told him, his voice rough with emotion as his eyes filled with tears.
David went limp in his arms, life burning out in an instant. Evan let out an inhuman moan, holding David close to him.
