Prompt: U as in U is for Underwater.
When Evan was very small, his Grandfather would hold him in his lap and tell him to stay away from the ocean. He didn’t understand why. The sea was great and he liked going into the waves, but he was his Grandfather and his Mother told him never to disobey Grandfather. So, when the rest of his friends went to the beach, he stayed home and painted, or he swam in a pool, if there was the opportunity.
But never the ocean.
Evan grew up, making his Grandfather very proud and having a need to be in the air, leading him to join the Air Force and fly planes. He served with distinction and drew the attention of his superiors, who granted him the opportunity to go to other planets and see things that had never been seen before. Then he was assigned to the not so mythical city of Atlantis. Which was completely surrounded by the ocean.
But he liked his job and if he went out of his way not to get into the water, it wasn’t a big deal. Evan would just stay out of the ocean around them and just enjoy the nice air and the spectacular view.

Waves rose up and battered the shields as Evan stood watching on one of the balconies, waiting to escort the last of the scientists off world. He looked into the water, feeling dazed and almost longing for it when the shield went down and the wave crashed over the group, sweeping Dr. David Parrish over the edge as he fell towards the ocean.
Evan pushed himself up, his weapon forgotten and already soaked through as he tore off his vest and ran towards the edge, diving into the water below, hoping like hell he didn’t die and that David wasn’t already dead. As he hit the frigid water, he heard his Grandfather’s voice in his head.
Don’t go into the ocean

Evan hit the cold water and looked around, trying to see some sign of David in the waves. He swam deeper into the ocean, feeling something change inside him. He didn’t feel any need to inhale at all, feeling his lungs slim down in his chest, his respiration slowing, and noticing that he was still getting enough air. Evan’s body continued to change, his legs growing together until he had a tail and fins like a seal. A clear membrane slipped over his eyes, allowing Evan to see clearly and his nose sealed completely as he used his body to swim, looking around and suddenly being able to understand the noises underwater.
Evan found David sinking lower, unmoving. He swam towards him faster, grabbing David around his chest and swimming up towards the surface. Evan surfaced and looked around, seeing the storm start to calm as his lungs filled up again and he started breathing normally. “Come on, David, please be ok, please be ok,” he said, pulling David up and putting him on the dock. He pulled himself up and pushed himself to David’s side, pushing down on his chest and doing mouth to mouth as his body returned to normal.
David sucked in a breath and started coughing, spitting out water as Evan smiled, relieved. “David? You with me?” He looked at him, nodding and panting.
“I’m ok. You came in after me?” he asked, shivering slightly.
“Yes. Are you ok? Can you move?” Evan asked.
“I’m fine,” David assured him, sitting up and hugging him close. “Thank you. Thank you so much for saving me.”
Evan held him and nodded. “I’m so glad you’re ok,” he said softly then reluctantly pulled away, helping David up to his feet and got him to the Infirmary.

Evan stood with his shirt off one of the docks as David walked towards him.
“Hey. Not that I mind the view, but what did you need to show me?” David asked with a grin.
“I’m… Something happened. Something really weird. Just watch, ok?” Evan told him nervously. He dived into the water and started transforming, surfacing and looking at David. “I don’t know what the hell is happening to me…”
David’s jaw dropped his eyes wide as he took in every inch of Evan’s changed body. “How is this… This isn’t possible, is it?”
“Shouldn’t be. But here I am,” Evan told him.
“This is fascinating… You’re a Selkie,” David told him, astonished.
“What do you think I should do?” Evan asked.
“We should probably keep it a secret. I’m having trouble not wanting to study you and I’m in love with you. The IOA would go nuts.”
Evan sighed and pulled himself back onto the dock, shifting back to human. David laid down next to him as they stared up into the sky.
“I’ll keep it a secret.”
“Me too. I’ve lasted this long without going near the Ocean. But I need to go to Earth to see my Mom. I think she knew and never told me.”
David glanced at him, rolling over to lie on his side and reaches over, putting his hand on Evan’s shoulder. Evan rolled to his side, facing him.
“What is it, David?”
“Do what you think it right, of course… But I love you. I don’t think differently of you because you happen to be a Selkie. I won’t let anyone hurt you ok?”
Evan blinks in surprise then smiles at him. “I love you too,” he says as he leans in and kisses him.
