Summary: In a futuristic AU, John Sheppard is testing Atlantis Tech's newest creation, the X3 Combat Armed Mechanoid.

John Sheppard stood in the corridor, trying to relax a bit. He had spent a week being briefed, and reading through miles of Alison Porter's work notes. He had known about the project, and even helped her ironing out some things in the base code, but this task was big. He was excited - really excited and a bit wondering if he was the right guy for this. But the decision was made, and he had his task. They were not at the lab complex anymore, because it was not desirable for the new prototype to awake in the lab - they were at Henderson Air base - a small airbase that served as the testing ground Number 1. Bouncing on his feet, John decided it was time to set to work - step by step. Opening the door, he stepped into the room - the usual double-quarters officers might share. His side was already ready for him to move in. The other side was generic. On the ground sat the crate - cryogenic transport unit. John knew how to handle those. He squatted down beside it, and slid his ID tag through the reader, unlocking the unit. A gust of cold gas shot out and the lid slowly began to open.

As the cryogenic unit opened, revealing a young man with light brown hair with almost blond highlights, smooth skin, wearing a skintight suit that left little to the imagination. He appeared to be sleeping but didn't move, revealing his lack of true life.

John nearly whistled - he had known that the X3 was supposed to be human, but he was rather sure that this one was not Alison's design. Parrish’s more likely - or the guy would not be as gorgeous. He chuckled, the quirks of this company... if people knew, they'd run for the woods screaming. Atlantis Tech was full of unique people. That was part of the reason he was happy to work with them.
He tapped the second set of systems, that would spark the initial awakening process, along with the unfreeze process of course. John remained squatted by the crate and watched. "I guess this will be weirder for you than me," he mused. "I mean... I know why I am here, but you? I guess they dumped you with some basic instructions, but still... it must be weird to wake up to your life. And that's what you are doing - awakening to life."

X-3 powered on as the computer started up, going through the initial programing and set up. It could hear a voice from far away, as the unit unfroze and started running the basic program. X-3 opened its eyes to reveal a pair of very blue orbs. Moments later a pupil developed and the unit smiled. "Many thanks," X-3 told the human before him. "I am the X-3 Combat Armed Mechanoid. It is an honor to make your acquaintance."

Wow. David had outdone himself with the physical design, right up there, especially the eyes and the voice. They were near-human. John smiled back at the X3. "John Sheppard," he introduced himself, extending a hand. "And more than glad to meet you." The whole training had been designed along a very specific scenario; it took some logistics, but would push the very borders of integrating an X3 into a real human unit.

The X-3 looked at the hand then lifted its own arm, looking at the hand and copied the human, grasping the offered hand like his software suggested. "John Sheppard. Voice match set. You will have command of this unit until the end of training period."

The handshake would easily pass as human - not too hard, even as the hand could easily crush any bone in John's body, firm and steady. Of course John knew that it was cybernetic fine muscle control - but it was just Wow still. He nodded, keeping to setting up the training scenario - which also included letting their trainee believe that this was for real. "There has been a change of plans - a severe change of the tactical situation," he informed the X3. "you were originally scheduled to conduct your training with my squad - 1st F304 fighter wing squad - but the unit was severely decimated four weeks prior ," Which was actually true, but it had been a real-life bad thing that had happened and nearly taken John out of commission. "And you have been assigned to serve as my 2IC in rebuilding the unit, once we get our pilots here." He gave the X3... damn it; the guy needed a name. "Sorry, but you will have to be into the real thing right from the start."

X-3 took in the information inputted by John Sheppard. "Yes, Sir. This unit is ready to serve in any capacity," it told him, sitting up.

John watched the X3 shake off the last stage of the cryofreeze. Getting to his feet, he offered a hand to help him up. "Okay... first things - the unit we will have to rebuild will be comprised of the few survivors of the original unit and whatever F304 capable pilot can be scrounged together. While they are aware of your person they have had no prior training in interaction with X3 units," Each and any of the people for the new unit underwent a briefing at this moment, and was sworn to top, top secrecy. The survivors had been moved to a high security hospital for that reason and the others were probably at either Cheyenne Mountain for the briefing or Fort Rainer base. "Because of that, it is recommended you refer to yourself as 'I' or 'me' to avoid confusion. And...” John trailed off and considered it. “Your designation, X-3 Combat Armed Mechanoid... let's abbreviate that to Cam, so it can easier serve as a name." John wanted a name for that man... he was a man, not a thing, and that began right here. I, me, a name. It was not exactly the first thing on the training list, but then, the list was recommendation, not an order.

"That is unnecessary, Sir. This unit can rise on its own," X-3 told him. "It is unlikely you could lift me, Sir," X-3 explained as it fluidly rose to its feet. "Yes, Sir. I or me in general conversation and I will be called 'Cam.' Any more instruction?" Cam asked, scanning him closely.

John grinned sheepishly. "Oh... of course. Humans when just awoken, or strained a bit, often have light troubles with their balance, which is why we tend to help each other up." It was amazing to see the full motion range - the guy moved like a jungle cat. He turned to the instructions again. "It will take at least a week for the surviving pilots to be released from hospital and for the others to finish their theory classes at Fort Rainer. We will use the time to get you acquainted with the base, base layout and the F304 simulators - you should be able to pick up on flying one of them easily enough." Alison had mapped and measured John's brain and reaction patterns while he was stressing in Sims, and used them as a base model. "Starting with the base - we will share quarters here. You bunk is over there, clothing, BDUs and so forth are stored in the locker. I'd suggest you change, so we can start on an overview of the base."

Cam added this information to his database. "I am fully programmed with flight abilities and I have a layout of the base preloaded into my software. But since you would do this for a new commander, I will happily comply," he said emotionlessly, stripping off the skinsuit, revealing his body to John and heading to the locker and pulling out the clothing. Cam looked at John and immediately started dressing himself, using his software and what he had already learned to dress like a human.

John reminded himself to explain human reaction to nudity to Cam soon. But at least he'd have no problems with communal showers and the little privacy of military life. Most of those taboos needed to be learned, because they were acquired with the intrinsic makeup of the psyche. This was why John just turned and took care of something on his own bunk, much as he would avoid staring with a human. Only here it had more reasoning behind it.

"The tour of the base is a two way thing," he explained. "It is for you to get a visual of the base, along with visuals and voice patterns of the people here, as well as for our people - tech crews and so on to see you, to get used to you being around. Our flight tech crew was badly shaken too - they were of course with us onboard Odyssey during the engagement, and the ship got badly battered. Not speaking of cutting the pilots out of several brutally damaged fighters, while the machines were ready to explode at any moment. Our flight engineers are tough guys, and where ever the F304's are send, they go with us - simply because there are not enough tech people qualified for working with these machines yet. But it also means they are closely attached to this squad and will need to get acquainted with the new personnel - starting with the new officers."

The tech crew was already briefed - they had been part of the original training scenario - and among them were two or three who were as relaxed about this as John, they were intended to serve as the first 'casual' human contacts.

Cam watched as John Sheppard turned away very quickly, trying to compute why this was occurring. "Very well, Sir. It will be good to meet new people." he told him, having dressed already, waiting motionlessly.

The motionless part would need some getting used to, but John did not comment on it - the software was designed for allow the X3 to pick up many things by just watching, which included mannerisms and some such. "Then let's get started," he said, leading Cam out of their quarters and they began the tour of the base.
