Alison Porter walked up the stairs to the compound, as she took off the scarf from her face. Her latest mission had been a success and the money had been earned. It wasn’t easy being an assassin these days, but their clan had survived.  She hurried to the Grand Master’s chambers, seeing Evan standing near the Master’s chair.

“That’s your seat now, Evan.”

“I don’t want it. I thought maybe… but no. No, I don’t want it; I sincerely don’t want it now.”

“We’ve spoken about this, Evan… It is your birthright. No one else can do this now. We must avenge your father’s death.”

“Is it wrong that I don’t wish too? I’m… It hurts to consider, it kills me to know he’s dead, but I don’t want to go to war with them.”

“What should we do instead then?”

Evan thinned his lips. “I haven’t got a clue, Ali. That’s what’s stopping me.”

Alison looked at him and nodded. “Well, to put that aside, my mission is complete, the target is neutralized and the client can now take the business from his brother.”

Evan chuckled. “Ah, family dynasties… they make for good clients. I’m happy that you’re back though. Stackhouse is an adequate bodyguard, but with Markham injured, he’s slightly distracted.”

“I like this job much better. How is Markham doing?”

“He’s going to make it. I can’t really punish Stackhouse for being distracted… so I’m overlooking it.”

Alison nodded, understanding. They had almost lost their brother, Jason Markham, after the strike on their clan that ended with the death of Evan’s father.  There were several others injured as well, but they would survive.

“Let’s get down to business since you’re here,” Evan said, getting serious as they sat together, going forward.

David glanced at Laura. “We erred when we attacked the Clan. They did not deserve that…”

“David, they had a moment of weakness, they would’ve done the same to us.”

“I know. I know that, but still. I think we made a mistake. We could’ve attempted a merger of some sort. Our lifestyles are fading, we’re dying out because people don’t want us around. It hasn’t been this bad since World War One.”

“I know that, but still. Your Father-“

“My Father is a feeble old man who had no business ordering that attack. He is dying.”

“Some are their deadliest when they’re on the brink of death. Your Father is like that.”

“My Father needs to hurry and die, Laura and you know it. We’ve just ruined our last chance to survive as we have the last thousand years.”

Laura sighed and nodded. “Well, you could always do it the way they used to do…” she suggested, not looking him in the eyes.

“I don’t wish to kill my Father but I see your point. It’s time leadership passes into my hands and we speak to the other clan. Tell Elizabeth to send a summons to the new leader. I will be… busy.”

“Yes, Sir.”

Elizabeth Weir stood near the river where they had agreed to meet. She inclined her head as the representative of the other clan arrived, inviting her to sit.

“You dare much, coming to us like this. I should kill you right now and lead a team to return the favor that your Master has done to us,” Peter Kavanagh told the woman, glaring at her.

“We don’t have Masters… We run things a little less like a family and more like a proper business, but we do concede that we acted… wrong. It was an error on our part…”

Peter scoffed. “It was an error on our part…” he said, mocking her. “I’d hate to see what other mistakes your business has made if this is just an error!”

“We’re coming to you to make amends. We want to make this up to you by suggesting a merger. Both of our clans, our businesses are dying out. We’re growing unnecessary, novelties in a changing world. We could work together, stop this from happening to each of our groups,” Elizabeth told him, laying out what they wished.

Peter looked at her with contempt. “I will bring this to my leader. But I promise nothing.”

Elizabeth inclined her head again as he disappeared from where they were seated, a disposable cell phone left with one number left in the contacts. She picked it up and left, disappearing into the crowd.

Peter came to Evan, half bowing. “I met the woman. She wants peace. They’re sorry for their foolishness. We could use this to our advantage, kill them for killing us.”

“No. They want peace, I want peace. I actually want peace. We’re already killing people to preserve our lives. We could strengthen ourselves with this.”

Peter scowled. “I disagree with this. But I will abide with your decision. You’re the Master of this clan and I am loyal to you, Sir. But I think this is a mistake.”

“Granted, Peter, however, I wish to do this,” Evan said with a slight smile.

Peter grinned with a chuckle. “Shall I meet with her, tell her what you want?”

“No. Call her and arrange for both of us to meet. This is a matter between leaders.”

Alison held her hand up. “The Son hasn’t killed his Father yet. You might need to arrange it for after they finish.”

“I will,” Peter told them.

“You’re a good man, Peter. Thank you,” Evan said with a grin.
Peter disappeared as Evan looked at Alison. “Can we do this? I mean… I want to do this. But should we do this?”

Alison met his eyes, giving him a reassuring look. “Evan… Don’t falter now. This is right.”

Evan held her hand. “Thank you.”

Laura looked at her counterpart, raising an eyebrow. She was cute. “Hello. I am the CEO’s bodyguard. My name is Laura.”

Alison grinned. “My name’s Alison. I’m our clan leader’s bodyguard. I’ve been over this place… No one will attack us here.”

“I have as well. I have my best men around and we’ve taken over the restaurant. No one can poison the food; all our men have been working here for the last month.”

“Very well done,” Alison admitted. “Shall we deliver our leaders?”

Laura nodded as she turned to get David and Alison disappeared then reappeared with Evan.

David walked into the room and finally saw the son of the old leader. He was gorgeous… absolutely gorgeous. He offered his hand.
“Hello. I’m David.”

“Evan. I’m sorry for your latest kill.”

“Shouldn’t I be saying that for our attack?” David asked. “That order was… It was a mistake of my Father. Please accept my deepest apologies.”

Evan nodded jerkily. “Thank you. I appreciate it. But I also think we should end this struggle.”

David grinned, knowing that this was a step that would save their lifestyles.
