ITP: Two Options

[It's getting to be rather late in the evening. ZEX is fiddling around with a really cool alien gadget, just outside and around the corner from the Mess Hall. It's a tiny projector that shows a big blue translucent sphere, upon which there are thousands of tiny dots of two different colors: green and red. He is moving the green dots my pointing and ( Read more... )

1. Humans have an inflated self-ego. They tend to be that they are the centre of the universe and since they are woefully uneducated on the matters of extraterrestrial life, they have had no opportunity to correct that.

2. Lasers have lights. Humans appreciate lights.

3. Clothing is culturally significant to humans and to illustrate the divide between alien life and human life, the loss of clothing is often used.

1. All species think this, at least to some extent. However, I suppose what is truly bothering me lies more in humans believing that alien races would go to the trouble of bothering an inhabited, possibly hostile planet for resources as common as helium, water, or oxygen. It is a bit silly, considering the nigh infinite number of uninhabited ones that would provide the same. Earth is pretty, but not worth being shot at over.

2. This one I will grant you. Sad but true.

3. Even with common suspension of disbelief, it strikes one as odd that, when humans visit a new planet, they come outfitted in radioactive-proof superthick respirator suits, and aliens do not seem to wear trousers. Are odd prosthetics truly not enough to differentiate between that which is human and that which is otherwise?

1.It's worth pointing out that currently, Earth is only aware of its own resources such as water, oxygen and helium and they're not commonly found on other planets within its vicinity. While it is a far-fetched conclusion to make, it is not without some merit. And as it stands, if other planets possess the same attributes, it also stands that they would eventually gain intelligent life. Planets tend to have unique features, with certain similarities. It might depend on the planet itself. Of course, this is all conjecture and I wouldn't waste my time on it.

3. Science-fiction is not my forte, I'm afraid. That sort of question is better taken up with the author.

1. If one assumes that all life is, without exception, carbon-based, I suppose I can see the logic in this. However, it is a bit disappointing all the same.

3. Hee, understood.

How are you this evening, my friend?

Because most literature comes from earth.

... And I believe it's because they want-they want to give alien species "sex appeal."

At this time, yes.

..."Sex appeal"? In what way?

I don't know about literature from other places.

The creatures in Avatar were very attractive. James Cameron made a point to make them that way. We are ... motivated by that.

Ah--an older simulation, from the Academy. I dislike what it represents, but it is useful for keeping my mind sharp.

You know what the fiction part stands for when it comes to science fiction, right?

Well, yes, silly. I also know that suspension of disbelief has limits.
