[over by the studios, there's a slightly less-than-melodic noise coming from one of the rooms. it's very loud. and very, very off-key. a certain ex-lawyer is failing hard at piano.]

Why are there so many pound signs in this song?

(( Annnd that's about all I can take \o/ Jesse and I are both getting thread-droppy, sorry. ))

... those are sharps, not pound signs.

Ah. That would explain it.

... what do sharps mean again?

It signifies a higher pitch. When the sharp symbol appears by a note, you raise the note by a half step - the black key to its right.

And you have to do that every time?

Every time there's a sharp by the note, you have to do that. It's like directions on a map, in a way - you need to turn left every time it tells you to turn left.

Or else you get lost.

( Except I think I'm already lost. )

You know, maybe we should save the lesson on sharps and flats for later.

That ... might be for the best. For now.

This isn't something you can just barrel through quickly. Unless you have the basics down pat, you won't be able to tackle the harder stuff that appears later in this book.

So I just keep playing "Mary Had a Little Lamb" until I'm magically better at it?

You can switch to "Row Row Row Your Boat" if you'd rather go with that.
