[In a trampled clearing of what was once part of the cornfield there is a marquis and a dragon. They are surrounded by a collection of ropes, carabiner hooks and an improvised harness made of twisted silk--as well as several hastily scrawled drawings in the dirt around them. The marquis drags a stick through the dirt, connecting two of the lines ( Read more... )

[--You're awfully young for such language]

She is a fantastic beast, is she not?

[I get that a lot]

Yeah! She has to be more than forty feet... This is so cool!

I can't but agree!

[Tugs on a bit of rope]

And shortly, I intend to ride her.

I'm pretty jealous of you right now, mister. Making your own harness?

Well, it cost me quite the sum of money, though I do think it will be worth it.

And yes, she is apparently not usually fitted with one of her own, so we are improvising; I would hate to fall.

In the auction that's been going on?

Yeah, that'd suck. Did you base the design off anything?

Yes, precisely. I hadn't thought it to be as much fun as it eventually won -- perhaps it is just that I enjoy winning.

[Tightens some rope] Mm, she has explained the concept to me and we have some crude blueprints -- [gestures to the pictures in the dirt] -- but it is rather an experiment in progress.

I know exactly what you're talking about.

Is there some way you're going to test it, or you just planning on tightening everything up and hoping for the best?

[Chuckles] Then we've something in common, you and I.

Ah, well... I expect we will not go very high at first, as a precaution.

...I've only been here a couple of days, so I'm not so sure how stupid this question is gonna sound. But is there a barrier thing above camp?

[Looks up]

Hmmm... the old location did; our new location seems to not have a barrier at all, save for the looping cornfields. There must be something up there, though, and we shall do our level best to avoid it. I am not looking to escape right at this moment, in any case.

You're not? 'Cuz if I was going to make a great escape I'd sure as hell do it on a dragon.

[Sighs]

To be truthful, after nearly two years I have given up on most plans of escape -- at any rate, I'd not think it to be so easy as simply flying away.

And I intend to enjoy my dragon ride.

Two years... huh. Well, I can't blame you. Do what you want.

I think it is very important -- to take pleasure where one finds it, in such a place as this.

Might I have your name?
