[In a trampled clearing of what was once part of the cornfield there is a marquis and a dragon. They are surrounded by a collection of ropes, carabiner hooks and an improvised harness made of twisted silk--as well as several hastily scrawled drawings in the dirt around them. The marquis drags a stick through the dirt, connecting two of the lines ( Read more... )

And hello to you; I am David Nassau, marquis of Athlum -- a pleasure to meet you, sir dragon.

[nods to]

It is nice to meet you as well; I am Commodore Temeraire of England's Aerial Corps, with Laurence.

Commodore? How fascinating -- you'll forgive me, but I have never heard of a dragon being given rank before.

I was the first.

Then my congratulations to you, sir Temeraire. Might I ask what action won you such honors?

I led the dragons in the breeding grounds, who were not fighting and did not plan to fight, out to harry the French and we gathered together a militia of men as well. The Army sent a commission to the leader of our battalion, and then Jane, who is the Admiral in charge of the Aerial Corps, made me a Commodore because it is a Corps rank instead of an army one.

[This. This is so exciting. Dragon. War hero. Dragon. Ffzt]

All the more honored for your acquaintence, then, as that is no mean feat.

--I shall have to ask her about that, then.

[arches his neck |D]

That is very kind of you to say.

She would like that, I think, having someone to talk about her ideas to besides myself.

As leader of my own armies, I certainly appreciate competence in the area.

--I would hope there would be many here that would be more than willing to speak to a dragon.

Oh, there are people who like to talk to us, but it is rarer to find someone who has the experience and knowledge to fully understand her theories.

I see, of course. That must be the same for all truly great strategists.
