GENERIC MESS HALL POST GO

Mar 20, 2009 11:38

[Over in a slightly out-of-the-way corner in the Mess Hall, there is a boy! A boy with a glass of water! And he appears to be studying it very, very intently.]

Does this look half-full or half-empty to you...?

Half-full or half-empty? What sort of question is that? Why sit around in the mess hall pondering when there is only one reasonable answer to your dilemma?

. . . I guess that does kind of solve the problem.

Why don't you just fill it the rest of the way?

That's... not really the point.

But it's water.

You drink it.

Really?

Yeah! Look, see, there's just enough water to fill it halfway!

Yeah, but the top half is empty.

No.

Well, that depends! Did you drink the water, or did you pour it into it?

Well, I had juice, but I drank it. And then I refilled it with water. ... But I tripped and spilled some on the way over.

Then when you drank it, it became half-empty! But then it was full. And then half-empty again. It's easy! But if you refilled just half of it, then it would have been half-full!

... That's kind of complicated.
