In some lands, the plant is a traditional holiday-time decoration. There is also the tradition where couples kiss underneath the decoration of the plant. Camp being what it is, the native mistletoe compels those underneath it to kiss.

Indeed. I am afraid that that is the truth. The only safety is attempting to maintain a sufficient physical distance from the plant or, if that is not possible, from other people. Unfortunately, that is made difficult by the insidious abundance of the plant and the ever-changing nature of what constitutes a "safe" distance.
