I had postponed the monthly remembrance of those not with us in camp in order to honor what is called Veteran's day in this time. Once a year, those who serve and have served their nations by putting their lives on the line are honored for their loyalty, bravery, and, in many cases, sacrifices.
There is a strong sentiment against those in the military here in camp. This, I can understand. Many of us have been affected deeply by war; some of us have lost loved ones or known others who have. Some of us have been displaced by advancing armies, have had homes destroyed, have had entire villages or cities destroyed. And as war is waged by armies, I can understand the resentment toward those who fight, kill, and die for their nations.
However, the military is not always about killing for your nation. Good people fight on the front lines in the defense of their homes. And perhaps not just their homes, but the homes of everyone in the nation they had sworn to protect. They are defending not only other people, but the ideals and beliefs held by their people. Ideals like loyalty, honor, and freedom.
So today, I ask that we not only remember those who are not with us in camp, but also the soldiers who vowed to protect the lands we hail from. Those who have fought bravely and honorably to ensure that when we leave camp, there is still a home for us to return to.
Thank you.
