They were quite sinister until we renovated them. I think this place may have been some sort of scientific facility originally.

Actually, that would make sense from the perspective of creating the barrier and from a lot of the wildlife. A science facility would already have much of the right type of power and facilities for creating an impermeable barrier. Admittedly, I haven't been here long enough to know.
