[There is a female robot in camp. She is considering the barrier above.

And she is holding a giant gattling gun in one hand.

ETA: She is no longer holding a giant gun. She is still in the middle of camp.]

(Okay, my icons spazzed out, so you may be seeing a lot of defaults. But it is fixed for new comments.)

This had better not be Dairine's fault.

I believe you can assure yourself that she is not, in fact, the fault of a friend of yours.

Yeah, thanks.

She is, in fact, technically my property, so you may blame me if you desire. Her creator is one Kevin Winnicot, however.

...so why did you program her to attack the barrier with a gun?

You make very odd assumptions. It is her own decision to attack the barrier, based on her AI. I presume she is doing the same thing that many new arrivals do; attempting to leave again.

I didn't.

Nor did I, but it is hardly an unusual reaction to do so.

You mean stupid.

Do bear in mind that your personal knowledge, or even camp-wide knowledge, such as that the barrier is 'impenetrable', is not something that new arrivals know. Testing a hypothesis - that the barrier will break under bullet fire - is not stupid. Continuing to fire uselessly at it once the hypothesis is proven false would be stupid, and I have no doubts that she would stop. Her programmers were, after all, the best.

What knowledge? It's common sense! If you make an attempt to leave, the least you do is research to see what others have done.

Your perception is flawed; that is what you would do, and so you consider it common sense. You are used to working with others, I would surmise, and using information garnered through testing that others have performed. KOS-MOS is the first of her model, and her capabilities are widely different from any other anti-Gnosis weaponry; she is not designed to utilize old data. She is designed to collect data. To her, relying on what others have done to guide her actions is not 'common sense' at all, because her abilities are unparalleled in our home.

...the process I described was collecting data. It's just assuming that you wouldn't want to reinvent the wheel.

Actually, I quite enjoy reinventing the wheel. I've done it many times.

Collecting data based on others. The data on her abilities faced with the barrier does not exist. I have to admit a personal curiousity in seeing the effect her tertiary weapons system would have on the barrier.

Regardless, your assumptions mean little to anyone but yourself, so do continue as you were. Feel free to make quick judgements based on your closed personal experience; it is a very rare human who does not.

It was patented in 2001, you know!

Don't worry. I plan to.
