1844: Joseph Smith, the founder and leader of the Mormon religion, is killed by a mob in Carthage, Illinois.

1922: The first Newbery Medal for children's literature is awarded to The Story of Mankind, by Hendrik Willem van Loon.

1950: Two days after the invasion of South Korea by North Korean troops, the U.N. approves the use of force to repel them.

1976: The first case of the Ebola virus is reported in the Nazra township of Sudan.

2003: Georgia L. Lass, a Seattle, Washington teenager, is killed by debris from the decommissioned Russian space station, Mir.
