Er... I don't imagine anyone's been looking for me, but I'm still sorry I've been such a recluse. I've been kind of absorbed in studying the nature of love. You know, one of those things that kind of starts as a thought experiment and just keeps going...? Anyway, now I've got all the equipment set up, and I've managed to split the love atom right ( Read more... )

The nature of love...! It's so inspiring to see today's youth busy with research that can benefit us all~

Hey, I'm glad someone likes it! It was just a thought-experiment gone way too far, but hey, maybe it'll do some good in the world after all...

Of course it'll do good! After all, what the world needs now is love, sweet love~ ...What's a heartquark?

It appears to be the fundamental particle of love! It's only a theory, and I'm not sure what exactly you do with them, but it never hurts to know things!

...So, you've just got some stored up? Could you put them into, say, a bottle, or a ray gun or something?

A bottle? I guess I could...

... a ray gun, though, would be much easier! Heck, I even have a couple of spares around here that wouldn't be hard to disarm and modify...

A ray gun that shoots out love... Think of what you could do with something like that...!

Lots of things! ... Many of them questionally ethical, admittedly. Did you, er, have any plans...?

...Not really.

--But think of it, you could be like the modern-day Cupid, spreading happiness to everyone!

Happiness and awkwardness! Probably more awkwardness than happiness, though, unless you were really careful to make it all... requited... and such.

Ah, but awkwardness doesn't need any help--it spreads just fine on its own. I mean, heartquarks aren't strong enough to do anything more than enhance already present feelings...are they?

I'm still figuring that out, personally. I would imagine they would act most readily on pre-existing emotional bonds, but it's not infeasible for them to create emotion out of thin air. It really depends on some coefficients I haven't derived yet.

You probably can't be sure until you perform some controlled experiments. If you could make sure no one got hurt, I think you should go for it--you could be on the verge of an incredible breakthrough here!

You do have a point. Do you have any idea where you'd get volunteers for that kind of thing? I don't want to just post a poster; that would make me look like some kind of perv...

The mess hall, maybe? I mean, really, who wouldn't volunteer in the name of science? Besides, it might be best not to give full disclosure at the beginning of the test, just in case that skews the results...

I'm not sure it's even remotely ethical to do a double-blind study involving love, though. Which is something of an obstacle.
