we're all poor

I really detest cheapness in all facets of life, but most of all when it occurs when settling the bill after a group meal at a restaurant.

I went to lunch at a spot near my office--one of my favorites--with some coworkers and junkmale, who decided to do a disappearing act when we got to the restaurant. And then there were four, including a woman from my office who I thoroughly enjoy and reminds me of an older version of my friend Andrea, and two of our interns.

When it came time to pay, it appeared we had each gotten something for lunch that cost $7.95, and we'd each only had water to drink. Easy, right?

Of course not. I examined the bill and threw in $11, figuring $8 for lunch, $.75 for tax and $2 for tip. The interns, apparently, felt I was being way too generous because each put in $9.

Nine dollars.

In short, $1.05 for tax AND tip.

Now, I freely admit that as a former waitress, I am sometimes way too generous when it comes to tipping. When the guy downstairs makes my sandwich, I give him a dollar. A hardworking busboy? An extra $2. So if you're not willing to give as much as me, I completely understand. But when you cheap out, that just means I have to give more than my share to avoid facing the ethical dilemma of stiffing the waitress. Which I will just not do.

Because as we all know, karma's a bitch.
