we are the (semi)champions

My kickball team reached it to the championship match today. Quite a difference from a team that lost all but three games last season. Go Team Keg!

The reaction I get when I tell people I play kickball is so funny to me. It's such a big part of my life, and yet everyone seems to think it's a joke. I guess a bunch of 23- to 27-year-olds getting together every Sunday to play a fake game and drink a lot of beer is humorous, but what strikes me is how close I've become to the people on the team -- most of whom I never knew when I was at Northwestern -- and how I tend to schedule my life around kickball events.

"Shopping on Sunday?"
"Can't, kickball."

"Want to go to dinner on Monday?"
"Eh, where?"
"Hard Times Cafe. Kickball people will be there."
"OK!"

The only downside of today came when we realized that one of the teams we were playing has the sense of humor of Ben Stein. annien1004 was in charge of the game recap for the newsletter last week, in my absence, and she came up with the hilarious line, "[Opposing team] is fast and easy ... just like their women." We found out today they were none too pleased with the remark, and one of their female players had the audacity to come up to us AFTER THEY LOST and tell us so.

BITCHY GIRL: "Did you write that in the newsletter?"
ANNIE: "Yes, but it was completely a joke. I don't even know you!"
CAM: "Yeah, I usually write them, but my mom was getting married" [thinks to herself, Why are you telling her this?] "and so she did it last week. She was totally kidding, we don't think you're easy!!"
BITCHY GIRL: "That kind of thing isn't funny. Have a nice day."

Um, OK. Maybe people who are so sensitive about being fast and easy have a reason to be so sensitive about being fast and easy. I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'. Grow a sense of humor, Bitchy Girl.

But to summarize: GO TEAM KEG!

kickball, annie, funny
