Tales of Little Campbell Installment 1

I feel suddenly nostalgic.

I had a random memory of myself this morning.

My first grade class was taught by a woman named Brenda Demchik, whom I loved, but whom my step-father referred to as Dumchik. I remember I won a third place ribbon for penmanship in the first grade. It was white. I was horrified. I told myself even then it was not good enough. The next year was second grade-- and that was the year I took first place in district for creative writing, and got about fifteen ribbons (all first place) for various other categories at school, and won Scholastic Acheivement award as the top second grader in the school. I also tested in the 99th percentile on the Iowa test. I went on to repeat these accomplishments throughout elementary school.

I blame that first grade white ribbon.

I was completely top of my game all through school until sixth grade when a boy named David Trejo who had incredible dimples was moved next to me in class. It was all downhill from there.
