I think the writer trivialized the political climate of the times in his opening. Some people didn't sit "idly" by because they didn't care. They just didn't want to be shot, either. They weren't living in a democracy. Not that it's any justification but it's also easy for us to project what we would do in that situation when we're kind of spoiled living here in these times, because...as much as people want to shoot those of us who aren't blindly patriotic, legally they still can't.

Still being the operative word.

Plus the culture is such that questioning things instead of following the crowd has always been looked down upon. But I guess that's true of most cultures.

Incidently, some California teacher did an experiment in his class to show how people could get caught up in that sort of regime, and students were almost killed as a consequence. By the same kids who expressed disbelief that people would ever do that. Very chilling. There's a movie about it, and everything.

good for you! i think when i was younger i would have tested that way when i had a fire in my belly and wanted to fight the world as a whole. now i think i realize how little can be done when the power is in the wrong hands-- which is all very cynical and jaded, but it is what it is.

So we'd be together in London then, recalling our glory days in the Black Forest and hoping that 'bit of mess' in Germany would go away so we coudl go home. :-\

I've got quite the group of expatriates going to Paris with me in 1932 or 34 or whenver all that went down. we could wear very cute pillbox hats and dresses and drink sherry and talk about the good ol days. :-) this is no surprsie as we are politically neutral thoguh.
