Title: All These Small Things
Pairing: Winters/Roe
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Terrible run-ons and abuse of commas and semi-colons.
Summary: Fifty little thoughts in one-sentence snippets.
Notes: Just something to help me get back into the groove of writing; I may do some more of these fifty-sentence prompts -- I really enjoyed it.
01 :: Ring
It’s an old ring, hidden in the desk drawer of the German house currently being looted, and as Dick turns the tarnished silver band between his thumb and forefinger he wishes he could give Gene something so precious.
02 :: Hero
They’re both heroes, both honored war veterans; but at home, they’re just Gene and Dick, and it’s better this way.
03 :: Memory
Soon, this kiss will just be a memory, locked away and hidden and not quite forgotten, but right now it’s the most real thing Gene has ever felt.
04 :: Box
If one meager box of foul bandages and morphine is enough to elicit that much of a smile from Roe, Winters wants to know what twenty would do.
05 :: Run
He’s running, weaving, ducking, faster and faster because someone is screaming and oh god Winters doesn’t know what he’ll do if Roe falls, crumples into the snow as a bullet finally finds the heart he wants so badly to hold.
06 :: Hurricane
These feelings are so crowded, so hectic, so confusing; when Winters kisses him, it’s as though he’s found the eye of his emotional hurricane.
07 :: Wings
The only thing his angel is missing is a pair of snowy white wings.
08 :: Cold
They’re so cold; but sitting next to each other in the same foxhole, at least they can be cold together.
09 :: Red
Winters chuckles at Gene’s pouting face and taps the tip of his nose playfully; “Easy’s resident rudolf.”
10 :: Drink
Drinks are for laughing away celebrations and drowning down tears; Dick thinks that this one is for both.
11 :: Midnight
In Bastogne, there are no clocks, and there is no sense of passing time because the frost freezes every second in its place; but as a light shoots overhead, whistling, and Roe’s hand clenches his hand tight, Winters thinks it might be midnight.
12 :: Temptation
Every Sunday school lesson Dick’s ever had has been long thrown away in favor of pale, soft skin and shocking black hair and careful hands and wise blue eyes.
13 :: View
The town outside of his window has been desolated, a crumbling shadow of used-to-be’s and long-ago’s; but if Dick turns his head to see Gene next to him, he sees only hope.
14 :: Music
Sometimes, Dick will hum to him, gentle and a bit out of key, but somehow the notes vibrating through his chest and the steady beat already there stay perfectly in synch.
15 :: Silk
Everything in Gene’s world is rough to the touch, so Winters’ silk-smooth kisses are all the more appreciated.
16 :: Cover
“You were typing your report and Roe was out scrounging bandages,” Nix says smoothly, with a knowing smile, and Dick is relieved that at least he won’t have to be the one lying.
17 :: Promise
One day, Dick will be able to keep all of his promises; today is not that day.
18 :: Dream
Somehow Gene’s been able to get into his dreams, to stop the nightmares before they even happen.
19 :: Candle
The low light of flame plays wonderfully on Roe’s tired face, all shadows and smooth, pale angles, and Winters cannot find the energy to drag his eyes away.
20 :: Talent
Gene may hate the business of watching men die, trying to fix them before they do, but he has such a talent for saving lives that Winters can’t imagine him as anything but a medic.
21 :: Silence
Winters doesn’t know what they’re waiting for, standing outside in the cold with their hands stuffed in their pockets and fog pouring from their mouths, but the silence is blessing enough for him not to care.
22 :: Journey
It’s odd to think that he’s gone from small-town Pennsylvania to Gene’s arms; Lancaster seems so long away and far ago that he’s unsure he’ll ever be able to return.
23 :: Fire
Winters’ touch burns like fire on Gene’s skin, makes him ache and hurt; but that’s alright, because being set aflame is better than being as cold as he was before.
24 :: Strength
With Dick, he has no fear of being weak because somehow the major manages to be strong enough for both of them.
25 :: Mask
Whenever Gene is close to him, Winters puts on his façade of calm, cool collectedness, when all he really feels is excitement and joy.
26 :: Ice
Gene’s hands are cold as ice; Dick decides he’ll have to fix that.
27 :: Fall
There’s concern in those blue eyes, the worry of a man for his brother, but also something else; Gene instinctively grasps Winters’ hand and lets him help him up.
28 :: Forgotten
Winters wonders if God has forgotten him in this frozen hell; then he realizes that he’s been sent an angel.
29 :: Dance
They’ve got this perfectly choreographed: every step and movement is forcedly casual, keeping them at a fair distance, until no one is there to appreciate their dance routine.
30 :: Body
He looks at the pale body, twisted and limp and caught between moments, and stubbornly refuses to acknowledge it is his lover.
31 :: Sacred
Every movement Gene makes is sacred, every sound more holy than any prayer Dick has ever heard.
32 :: Farewells
There’s this silent agreement that neither will never say a finalized good-bye, because they’ve had enough of those to last a few lifetimes.
33 :: World
Gene purses his lips, scrutinizing the map until he finds it; placing his finger, he says definitively, “There.”
34 :: Formal
“You’re worthless,” Gene jabs softly as he tightens Dick’s bowtie with a small flourish.
35 :: Fever
Gene perches dutifully in the rocking chair beside Dick’s bed until his fever breaks, brushing the back of his hand along his damp forehead regularly and supplying mountains of blankets and ceaseless mugs of Cajun tea.
36 :: Laugh
The first time Winters hears Roe laugh, it’s an unexpected but entirely welcome sound; when he realizes this is the first time he’s heard the medic laugh, he makes it a secret goal to make it happen again.
37 :: Lies
Every word about going home, peaceful dreams and a warm bed to share with an even warmer body - they were lies, but Roe lived clinging to every word.
38 :: Forever
Forever is out of the picture; eternity is off the board; instead, they take it day by day, and treasure every moment.
39 :: Overwhelmed
Some days it wasn’t enough to feel useful, to feel needed, and on those days only Gene’s lips on his forehead mattered.
40 :: Whisper
Gene’s whispers of fervent French in his ear were absolutely addictive.
41 :: Wait
He watches the room to empty before he places his hand over Gene’s; the squeeze he receives in return is well worth the wait.
42 :: Talk
Dick will do close to anything to get Gene to talk, if only to hear more of that intoxicating southern drawl.
43 :: Search
The first time Dick says it, Gene scans him thoroughly; he must be satisfied that he isn’t lying, because he proceeds to press his lips tight against Dick’s own.
44 :: Hope
Heart racing and eyes wide, Roe's hope burns and aches inside him like some terrible new form of warfare.
45 :: Eclipse
Winters’ has this natural ability to block out everything dark; Roe decides this must be what his grandmother told him was someone’s inner “lumière.”
46 :: Gravity
It’s strange how one moment he can be dragging his feet in exhaustion and then feel lighter than air the next; it’s as though Roe’s kisses alter the laws of physics.
47 :: Highway
“Let’s get lost,” he says, throwing the map carelessly to the backseat.
48 :: Unknown
Winters doesn’t know if this will be the last time they see, let alone kiss, touch, hold, one another; he takes full advantage of the moment given.
49 :: Lock
There’s this feeling, one of utter peace and freedom and adoration and loving and being loved, in his heart, and he locks it away because it’s the only way he wants to feel for the rest of his life.
50 :: Breathe
Between tears, Winters is there, whispering to him so he won’t forget to breathe.
