Stupid Laws

I keep hearing about these stupid laws and felt that I needed to rant about them. It appears that as Americans we can no longer decide how to run our own businesses. In both New York and Ohio they have band smoking in establishments. When did the government decide that they can start running our lives. You would think we were in Communist ( Read more... )

The smoking one...I'm kinda so-so about. Simply because, in my mind, you can only go so far with the "If you don't like it, you don't have to go there" argument when someone's personal health is damaged through another's actions.

The trans-fat one is ridiculous though. People should take responsibility for their own health. They don't want trans-fats? Don't order something with them in it.

With smoking, it's not like you can choose not to breathe. And it's not like you always have a choice what private businesses you go to. If your boss tells you to go to another business that allows smoking to drop off something, you can't say "They allow smoking, I think we should do work with a different, non-smoking, business so I don't have to go there." In my personal opinion, with smoking, you're starting to get into the "as long as it does not damage another person's rights" clause.

I'm no law major, but I know that I personally would appreciate knowing that if I had to go to a specific business in a certain area I don't have to worry about breathing someone else's smoke.
